Prepare for an updated paper recycling standard, says CEPI
T
o improve the quality and defi niti on of grades for paper and board used for recycling, the
European List of Standard Grades of Paper and Board for Recycling is being revised by the European Committ ee for Standardisati on (CEN). Nati onal standardisati on bodies
that are members of CEN voted unanimously in favour of the update to the EN643 standard
at the beginning of November following many years of work by the involved parti es. The revised EN643 will now be
translated and published by CEN and its nati onal standardisati on bodies by February 2014. The CEN working group was able to agree on a number of improvements to the EN643, including a grade-specifi c tolerance level for non-paper components and more detailed descripti ons per grade.
The Confederati on of European
Paper Industries (CEPI) says that all organisati ons and individuals involved in trade with paper and board for recycling are advised to prepare for the introducti on of the updated standard. Jori Ringman-Beck, CEPI Recycling and Environment Director, said: “Although this material has a waste status legally, it is important to push quality management through the whole supply chain.”

The bioeconomy and resource management feature at Pulpaper
Theme of the internati onal Pulpaper 2014 Conference being held in Helsinki from 3-5 June 2014 is Biofuture for Mankind. Covering bioeconomy and resource management for a sustainable

November 2013 Industry discusses growth in Brussels
European Paper Week 2013 is being held from 26-28 November 2013 at the EU Thon Hotel in Brussels where pulp and paper industry’s top management will meet to discuss with representatives of the value chain and policy makers. Theme this year is ‘Growth Reinvented’. Organiser CEPI says its 2050 Roadmap towards a low-carbon bio-economy has set up a pathway to the industry’s growth at a time of economic and financial crisis, helping to reignite industrial growth in Europe. The Annual Meeting will feature European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard and European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik, as well as former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson.
Bigger and better Asian Paper in 2014 Asian Paper, a trade show dedicated to the pulp and paper industry in South-East Asia, is being held again in Bangkok from 23-25 April 2014. When last held there in 2012 the show att racted more than 4,500
visitors, and according to the organisers will be even bigger next year. Key regional producers at the show will include APP and APRIL, as well as
internati onal suppliers, that include ABK, Garuda Engineering Technologies, Dechangyu Paper Machinery Manufacturer, Kadant Lamort and Lorentzen & Wett re. The will feature pavilions from France, Finland and CPPI, as well as new pavilions from India and Singapore. CEPI has been advocati ng
responsible sourcing and quality management of paper for recycling for more than 10 years. At an informati on session on EN643 during European Paper Week in Brussels at the end of November CEPI experts described the detailed changes to the standard. CEPI has also prepared a guidance document that explains the diff erences from the old EN 643 in a printed pocket- size format.
