Pulp Paper & Logistics

LOGISTICS 17

“Downton already has a strong foothold in the paper industry, working with major manufacturers like UPM-Kymmene and Saica Paper, as well as having a strong customer base in the publishing sector. Over 70 per cent of all magazines and newspaper supplements delivered in the UK are transported by a Downton vehicle. “Our existing operations in the publishing sector and the paper distribution infrastructure that C&H (Hauliers) Ltd provides means we are in the perfect position to serve clients both upstream and downstream, and find shared efficiencies that will benefit customers across the industry. With the acquisition of C&H, Downton has secured its place as the market leading logistics partner for paper manufacturers and publishing companies, and we intend to develop this leading position further as time goes on.” Phil Armstrong, partner at FRP

Advisory and joint administrator, said: “We are delighted to have found a new home in C M Downton for the business of C&H, its staff and its array of loyal customers. “For more than 50 years C&H has transported core parts to Britain’s manufacturing base and its services have been integral to their success – that continuity of service is now secured under new ownership. “We would like in particular

to thank the support of C&H customers which helped ensure a successful, swift turnaround through the protection of the administration process. We wish the purchaser and everyone involved with the business continued success for the future.” The deal means that 180

jobs are being rescued, with all employee rights fully protected under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment)

Regulations. The acquisition also sees Downton take over significant assets, with 130 tractor units and 250 trailers added to the Gloucestershire-based haulier’s fleet. Founded in 1955, C M Downton is of the UK’s leading independent logistics firms with 1,600 tractor units and 1,800 trailers, and employing 1,350. Its clients include News International;

UPM-Kymmene Corp, Accolade Wines; AB InBev UK; Marketforce; Prinovis and C&C Group. Downton has 11 major
