DID I BLINK AND MISS AGAIN? How on earth did we get to November already? I guess I’m going to have to start thinking about the

holiday season and all of its accompanying hullabaloo. Time to bring out the “non-skinny” jeans as well with all the eating-and-drinking-related celebrations and the ensuing pleasure they bring. Well, maybe not the jeans part. Thankfully, this issue, our food and drink edition, is filled with tantalizing images, recipes, wines,

beer and classic cocktail information to help make the culinary portion of our lives a little more in- teresting. And wait till you see what we can do with a crustacean, or rather what cover model Steven can do. It had me seriously reconsidering the consequences of my allergy to shellfish. What’s a little anaphylaxis. Isn’t that what an epipen is for after all? This month was a roller coaster in many ways; the interview with Matthew McConaughey and Jean-Marc Vallée for the film Dallas Buyers Clubwas intense and very personal for me. The film was a not-so-easy trip back to the mid-‘80s, during deeply troubling times when the HIV/AIDS epidemic was in the first stages. Fear was a constant bedfellow and the lack of compassion or willingness from others to help was like a silent but persistent scream. I was impressed, not onlybythe performances, but by the film itself. It is rare when a film manages to capture great emotion, even rarer when it captures the feeling of the era/time in which it was shot. They did it in this film, the memory of it was palpable, especially for those of us who lived through it first-hand. It reminded me of fond friends lost and how much the vacancy they left still exists. Time heals, but you never forget that kind of battle or the losses. Margaret Cho was a total gas; she has more humor in her little pinky than most posses in their

whole being. There is a seriousness to her as well and I think a little of that comes through. She’s a total whip and a person I want to keep in my corner when fighting a battle, “don’t mess with Mother Nature” keeps running through my brain. What a lovely lady and a busy one, a sold-out tour, music, clothing, TV, web presence, podcasts, you name it; she is shooting across the sky in a blur of colorful witticisms, not unlike the inks covering her beautiful body. Take a look through these pages, dear readers, I think we managed to pulled together another

interesting blend: some food, some food for thought, some wine and a little cheese, a bit of beer and a whole lot of spirit. So gather with your friends and share; eat some, drink a little, laugh a bit and enjoy the ride.
