center of everything back in the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. It’s a historical part of Hillcrest that had been forgotten for so many years, so we thought, ‘What a great idea to watch a movie, pop some popcorn and connect with people again in the original hub of the the com- munity.’” The movie night came about after the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) asked business owners to collaborate on an event to be launched in the neigh- borhood, says HBA Marketing and Communications Director Megan Gamwell. After one business owner mentioned that Park Boulevard was once home to a movie theater known as the Fox Egyptian Theater, “everyone instantly became excited about bringing this part of history back to Hillcrest and Park Boule- vard,” Gamwell recalls. The monthly event will showcase a film served up
in a bring-your-own-blankets and chairs setting, with local business owners and artisans setting up shop along the sidewalks to evoke a traditional Bazaar feeling. But Heat’s movie night is not just about moving pictures, talkies, shopping and popcorn, say the event coordinators; it’s also an event intended to
draw residents back to a beautiful gathering place that is rich with history and bursting with personality. “I think this event is about bringing beauty and pres- tige back to Park Boulevard,” Gamwell says, pointing to the business association’s recent efforts to revital- ize the neighborhood. “My hope is for the community to support the
movie night and the local businesses on the block,” adds Korish, who was recruited to serve as a board member of the business association because of his efforts to clean up the neighborhood. “I want to see a lot of people enjoying themselves and enjoying the businesses and enjoying the community,” he says, admitting to “getting chills just talking about it. We are the children of the Egyptian block, so we’re doing everything we can to bring it back to its former glory.”
Hillcrest’s Egyptian Bazaar & Movie Night will kickoff Thurs- day, November 14 by featuring the classic film, Cleopatra, with a pop-up sidewalk sale under the stars at 5 p.m. in the lot at 3811 Park Boulevard between Numbers nightclub and Heat Bar & Kitchen.
