therapyspotlight Transformational Breath by Lisa Marlene T
ransformational Breath, a self-healing modality that uses guided breathing exercises to bring about emotional release, inner peace and relaxation, was co-created by Judith Kravitz, founder of the Transformational Breath Foundation. The author of Breathe Deep, Laugh Loudly: The Joy of Transformational Breathing, Kravitz says she used her breath to heal a cancerous growth in her throat in 1979. Different than rebirthing, holotropic
breathing or yogic breathing, Transforma- tional Breath uses a fully relaxed breath that originates in the lower abdomen with repeated inhalation and exhalation without pausing. The benefits of a consistent, at-home practice may
help individuals cope with daily stressors by bringing about increased clarity, focus, peace, joy, energy, vitality and im- proved mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. The
greatest benefits are reported after con- sistent practice. Three sessions of guided Transformational Breath are recommended prior to an at-home practice. Increased oxygenation through-
out the body, which is the result of deep breathing, improves energy levels, stimu- lates circulation and balances the flow of energy through the body. A 2005 study of 21,563 individuals conducted by Japanese Medical and Dental Practitioners for the Improvement of Medical Care, found that
systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate were significantly reduced after deep breathing.
