ABP named Europe’s most productive container port

ABP’s (Associated British Ports) Port of Southampton has been ranked the most productive port in Europe and the number one- performing container terminal in the UK, according to an independent industry study.

Based on confidential data charting more than 100,000 port calls at 400 ports during 2012, the analysis from the Journal of Commerce (JOC) put Southampton’s productivity performance among a global elite.

The findings place Southampton at 20th in the world for productivity, the only port in Europe to feature in the top 20, with an average of 71 container moves per hour. This compares to 49 container moves per hour at the UK’s other major container port at Felixstowe.

ABP port director for Southampton, Doug Morrison, said: “While it is fantastic to be recognised as the best in Europe, this is just the beginning for Southampton. We have put performance and productivity at the very heart of our operation and are all committed to driving our service to the next level. I think it is this commitment that gives us the edge.

£4.7m to support Solent’s shipbuilding SMEs

BAE Systems has joined up with the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and Portsmouth City Council to support the Solent Futures SME Programme Fund, which launched at Portsmouth Naval Base recently.

This initiative forms part of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, with £4.7 million of investment funding available to help SMEs in the Portsmouth Naval Base supply chain in the Solent region.

As the shipbuilding sector starts to come off a recent peak of activity driven by construction of the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, the maritime services sector is gearing up to accommodate the completed flagships, with the first of Class HMS Queen Elizabeth expected to arrive in her home port of Portsmouth in 2017.

Bids are invited for grants of between £10,000 and £300,000 and suppliers will be required

to invest match funding into a project alongside a Solent Futures funding award.

Funding will be allocated via a competitive bidding process and applications will be assessed by a panel comprising representatives from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, Portsmouth City Council and BAE Systems.

SMEs in the supply chain of Portsmouth Naval Base interested in applying for funding attended the Solent Futures SME Supply Chain Conference last month at Action Stations, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The event provided suppliers with an opportunity to learn more about this programme and how to apply for funding under the scheme. Suppliers also learned about the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership’s strategic priorities for the region, the Royal Navy’s vision for the Naval Base, and how BAE Systems is working with partners in the supply chain.

“We believe our performance is the key to retaining our existing business and, already this year, this approach has seen us successful in winning new business. There’s been a huge amount of capital investment and hard work from the team here. We are all extremely proud of the reputation for customer service we have built, but no one here is under any illusions that we can afford to rest on our laurels.“
