Coastal cities to boast super connectivity

Portsmouth is set to become a Super Connected City as it secures up to £4.7 million from the department of culture, media and sport.

It will be awarded the vital funding through the Super Connected Cities Programme, and will benefit from superfast broadband across the city.

Portsmouth City Council has been working with the University of Portsmouth to put together an exciting series of community projects, designed to shape the city and raise its profile as a great place to live and learn.

Four key projects have been outlined for Super Connected Portsmouth. They aim to transform public services, provide wi-fi concession and good-quality free wireless access, enable connection vouchers and stimulate business growth, and promote Portsmouth as a ’showroom’ for digital technology.

The Super Connected Cities Programme, sponsored by the department of culture, media and sport, encourages take up of ultra-fast Internet connections which will benefit SMEs and encourage economic growth.

In another regional feat, Southampton City Council has approved plans to enable Southampton to become a first-class wi-fi and next-generation-enabled wireless city.

It is one of the first cities in the south to push ahead with the installation of wi-fi hotspots in busy locations, enabling residents and visitors to access the Internet while out and about.

The project will start in the city centre, waterfront and along key transport routes, with the potential to extend coverage in the future.

Council-owned structures, such as street lights, will be made available for service provider Arqiva to install the wireless network. Access will be free for 30 minutes each day, with a paid service available after that. This means people will be able to access websites relating to their travel or leisure plans, or their shopping needs, all free of charge.

Simon Letts, leader of the city council, said: “I’m delighted that Southampton is well on the way to becoming a leading digital city with residents and visitors soon able to have free access to the Internet in a range of locations. There are a great many potential social and economic benefits to the city in providing such a service, and it aligns with our priority to promote Southampton and attract investment.“

The initial five-year contract with Arqiva, which is currently rolling out a similar scheme in Manchester, comes at no cost to the council and will in fact provide a small income.

Fareham company introduces life- saving technology

Emergency medical equipment supplier DS Medical is set to unveil a new life-saving product, the NIO, which it showcased at the Emergency Services Show at the Birmingham NEC last month.

The Fareham-based company is the exclusive UK distributor of the NIO, which enables paramedics and other medical professionals to inject fluids and medication directly into the bones’ marrow in a quick and easy procedure.

These ’intraosseous (IO) infusions’ are crucial when patients’ veins are not available for the administering of vital drugs. Unlike existing appliances, the NIO is incredibly simple to use and because there is no preparation time, it can be operated in fewer than 60 seconds.

Intraosseous infusions are used for a variety of purposes, including injecting victims of heart attacks and those who suffer from diabetes.

Richard Bourke, managing director of DS Medical, said: “For medical professionals the seconds the NIO can save, allied with its simplicity, marks a breakthrough in intraosseous infusion.
