Women behind the wheel in fundraising appeal

Thrill-seeking Hampshire ladies Philippa Robinson (pictured), a director of WK Corporate Finance LLP, and co-driver Mel Hatton, class D powerboat racing world record holder, are calling for local support as they join fundraising forces to raise thousands of pounds for two Hampshire childrens’ charities

Calling themselves ’Team Bluebirds’, Robinson and Hatton will be taking it in turns behind the wheel of a 1960’s blue Riley in national event Lejog 2013, a Land’s End to John O’Groats annual classic car rally, taking place from December 7-12.

The dynamic duo will be kicking off fundraising for Hampshire hospice Naomi House and Southampton’s Rosewood Free School by hosting a Land’s End to John O’Groats themed charity fundraising dinner with a silent auction and raffle at Lime Wood Hotel in Lyndhurst on November 14.

Robinson said: “Naomi House and the Rosewood Free School are two important charities that are very dear to us, our friends and our colleagues. We are appealing to local businesses to come forward and support us and help us raise much-needed funds for these

important charities that provide specialist services to children and families across the south of England.

“We have already received a number of generous prizes for our auction, including a place on the Snow Leopard in the round the island race, an overnight stay and spa at beautiful venue Lime Wood Hotel, a day skipper course and a day at Goodwood.

“We would love to hear from individuals or businesses who would like to support us by sponsoring our tyres, maps or navigation equipment, and also we would love to hear from any businesses that would like to donate prizes, large or small, for our silent auction and raffle, or to attend our charity fundraising dinner.“

Tickets to the charity fundraising reception or sponsorship package details are available.

What do cookies have to do with data protection?

One of the south’s leading commercial lawyers is urging businesses to take cookies seriously, and she is not talking about the edible kind

Rachel Mott from Moore Blatch said the small text files collect data about Internet users and monitor a user’s website activity. While they may not identify an individual on their own, if they are linked with a postal or email address the information is subject to data protection legislation.

“We’re finding that too many businesses are still flouting legislation, breaching privacy and could be facing fines of up to £500,000,’’ said Mott. “It would appear that organisations are under the illusion that they can get away with minimal attempts of compliance and that is certainly not the case.’’

She said that EU law was introduced into the UK in 2011 and requires online providers to secure consent before using cookies.

“The so-called “Cookie Law“ aims to safeguard online privacy and protect web users from unwanted marketing. Cookies should only be used if the user has been provided with clear and comprehensive information about the purposes for which the cookie is stored and accessed and has given their consent.’’

Mott said that businesses were given time to comply but a report by KPMG in May this year suggested that major organisations in the UK have not embraced the law.

“KPMG has reported that 51% of businesses fail to comply with legislation and 43% rely on implicit consent,’’ said Mott. “By adopting an implicit approach, organisations are assuming individuals have previously consented to receiving cookies which is hardly the spirit in which the legislation was introduced.’’

She said that while organisations may wish the ’Cookie Law’ didn’t exist the Information Commissioner has the power to fine organisations up to £500,000 for non-compliance.
