Micro Focus International, the Newbury-based multinational software and information technology business, topped the latest table for share price rises among large Thames Valley companies with a 16% rise.

Among recent deals was one that saw OM, the leading Indian logistics company, use Micro Focus software to successfully modernise its Track and Trace Enterprise Resource Planning application. The implementation was said to have improved development efficiency by around 30%.

One of the best results among smaller companies was that of Acal, the Guildford specialist electronics supplier. In its first interim management statement for the coming year it said the pick-up in orders is continuing with like-for-like orders 7% higher in the electronics

division, which accounts for 88% of Group revenues. In the Myrra Group, acquired in April, orders grew by 9%.

Sopheon, another group with its UK headquarters in Guildford, had one of the most remarkable rises of the year in the sub-£50m section, where the biggest share surges are often recorded.

In June – on top of several new contract wins – the provider of software, expertise, and best practices for Enterprise Innovation Performance released the latest version of its Accolade innovation management solution. This promises to deliver best-in-class software, domain expertise and best practices for businesses to achieve sustainable market differentiation and drive profitable revenue growth from their innovation and new product development investments.

University plays pivotal role in health and safety guide

The International Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies based at Buckinghamshire New University is playing a leading role in developing a new edition of a guide to health, safety and welfare at events, which will be used across the industry.

The revised edition of the Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at Music and Other Events is due to be published next month by the Events Industry Forum (EIF), a body which comprises events industry trade associations and similar organisations, including the Centre at Bucks New University.

Teresa Moore, head of department – Music and Events Management at Bucks New University, who is director of education and training for the Centre, is an editor of the Guide and has contributed to chapters on crowd management and barriers and fencing.

The second edition of the Guide has been written by members of the EIF in consultation with the UK events industry and representatives from regional and national government. It replaces the first edition originally published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and will cover legislation and good practice for event organisers and suppliers.

Moore, who speaks extensively nationally and internationally on festivals and events, said: “Anyone who is connected to live events has probably referred to the Purple Guide at some stage so the Centre is extremely pleased to be contributing to the latest edition.

“We feel this illustrates the important role the Centre plays as adviser and commentator on the events industry.”

Mark Hamilton, head of the Centre and one of the leading experts in the industry, added: “The Guide has, since its first edition, been the foremost piece of guidance available to organisers of all types of events to ensure the public are able to attend in a safe and secure environment.”

The Centre was created in 2002 to bring together leading experts from the industry in the field of crowd safety management, under the umbrella of Bucks New University.

The Centre has developed higher- level qualifications in crowd safety management, which take into account legislation and guidance including the Taylor Report; The Purple Guide; and The Green Guide.

Hamilton added: “The formation of the Centre paved the way for the development of the higher- level qualifications in crowd safety management, which have helped to unify education in this area, taking on board this legislation and guidance.

“The Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies and Bucks New University have arguably led the way in helping to professionalise the industry.

“There are over 250 alumni of our programmes working in the industry around the world, many of whom are still associated with the Centre.”
