All-round approach to sustainability

When it comes to sustainability, one Thames Valley company is working hard to make sure it not only meets today’s expectations but delivers for tomorrow too

Thanks to its Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in Colnbrook, near Slough and Beenham, near Newbury, the company helps hundreds of businesses from across the region to meet their waste management and recycling targets.

It also generates electricity for thousands of homes via its joint venture Lakeside Energy from Waste (EfW) plant at Colnbrook, where the incineration of residual waste creates electricity, the vast majority of which is exported into the National Grid.

Grundon has also made tackling the food waste mountain a priority, recently signing a multi-million pound deal with Oxfordshire anaerobic digestion (AD) specialist Agrivert to build a new AD plant at Trumps Farm in Surrey.

All very impressive, but dig a little deeper, and you can soon see that

the family-owned business also takes sustainability very seriously when it comes to its own good housekeeping.

“For us, sustainability is about more than just waste management and recycling,” said Neil Grundon, deputy chairman. “It’s about taking what we do for other companies and then going one step further. As experts in the sector, we are constantly looking for new ideas and opportunities to lead the sustainability agenda.”

A typical example is the way Grundon ensures even the ash left at the bottom of the EfW incinerator can be used – it is sold on as a secondary aggregate for the construction industry.

Similarly, any glass which is unsuitable for recycling into new bottles and jars is sent for reprocessing into secondary aggregate – both solutions helping

to protect virgin aggregate supplies and reduce the impact of quarrying.

And, where Grundon still has landfill operations, it uses the latest technology to capture the methane gas produced, which is then used to power landfill gas engines on site and generate more electricity.

“We have worked hard to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions, improve monitoring processes, and upgrade our transport fleet to more fuel efficient vehicles, as well as provide ongoing driver training to ensure they operate as efficiently as possible,” added Grundon.

“While these may seem small measures when taken in isolation, they are all part of our bigger contribution to the sustainability picture.”

Another practical demonstration is Grundon’s ongoing support for the Thames Valley Business Magazine

Awards. For the second year running, it is sponsoring the Green Progress Award, looking for those businesses who have worked hard to improve recycling and environmental performance, for example by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill or reducing energy consumption.

Grundon concluded: “Companies who can demonstrate that they are diverting waste from landfill, recycling more and reducing their carbon footprint are fantastic champions of sustainability and this is a great opportunity for us to help celebrate and reward their efforts.”
