Improvements

City centre strategy launched

A new strategy and action plan for the city centre has been launched by Glasgow City Council in conjunction with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. The vision is for the city

centre, as Scotland’s commercial and cultural hub, to “build on its distinct assets and unique features to become the most innovative and progressive city centre in Europe”. The aim is that the city centre

should provide an “excellent and sustainable quality of life and experience for citizens, visitors and investors that will drive growth in employment, population and share prosperity”. The strategy covers six

aspects of city centre life: Shop & Play; Visit & Enjoy; Learn, Discover & Innovate; Work & Create; Invest & Build; and Stay & Live. The work on implementing

the new strategy will be led by a new City Centre Strategy Board, chaired by Glasgow City Council Leader Gordon Matheson. This strategy board will be

supported by an Operational Delivery Board, which will be responsible for delivering the key actions, to be made up of Council heads of service, key city centre partners and other operational stakeholders.

on three key goals: growing the number of shoppers coming to the city centre, improving access and enhancing the visitor experience. Speaking at the launch,

Chairman Paul Mitchell said: “Tis offers a real opportunity for members to work together in a proactive fashion to ensure we retain our position as the second largest retail economy in the UK.” Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive

of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s important that retail companies have a voice in the future direction of the city, and this new association will help to ensure that.”
