New brand launched to promote Glasgow
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of a new brand that will promote the city to the world. Council Leader Gordon Matheson launched
‘People Make Glasgow’ as the new brand to spread Glasgow’s message that will be used in the months running up to the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and beyond. Councillor Matheson said: “Glasgow is a
warm, welcoming and genuinely friendly city, because the people are.” Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow
Chamber of Commerce, said: “The new branding is in place, now we have to take the message out to the world to promote our city.”

Conferences are bringing in the business
Business tourism linked to Glasgow’s highly successful conference hosting activities has been worth £1 billion to the city economy since 2005. Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, a Chamber member, said that the milestone had been reached following a 27 per cent growth in business in the last financial year. The bureau, set up to promote the city,
said that convention business worth £153 million had been won in 2012/13. About 2,200 conferences have been hosted in Glasgow since 2005 with delegates now accounting for one in five hotel beds sold in the city. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “To have won £1 billion in conference business and more than three million hotel room bookings is a remarkable achievement. “It is little wonder that the bureau
has been recognised as being the best at what it does year after year. The economic benefit to Glasgow and its businesses will only be added to when The Hydro is up and running. There has been a bit of comment in the media about delays to the project but the important thing is the long-term positive benefit that The Hydro is going to have on hospitality, tourism and retail businesses in the city.”

competition in August. Te 2013 UCI Juniors Track World
Championships will be held in the city on 7-11 August. Competing over five days in the Sir Chris
Hoy Velodrome at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, the world’s best junior track cyclists will batle for world titles across a range of disciplines and at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour and beyond. Te cyclists will compete for gold medals and the coveted rainbow jersey on the circuit

Event takes pulse of Glasgow economy
Glasgow’s 16th State of the City Economy Conference will be held on Friday 15 November. The event, hosted by the Glasgow Economic
Partnership, is for people interested in the performance of Glasgow’s economy.
Those who attend include local and global businesses, academics, residents and workers. The conference will look at how some of
Glasgow’s policies regarding employment, investment, tourism, business support and economic growth are being implemented and how they are performing. The event is free and is being held at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Further information is available at

cycling to work in Glasgow helped generate £4 million in health-related savings, according to research conducted by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health. Te figure, calculated using a World Health
Organisation online tool, includes an amount for the reduced number of deaths and does not include economic benefits. GCPH said that the levels of cycling in and
out of Glasgow city centre had increased by more than 25 per cent since 2009.
