Boosting the health of the economy
Health and Life Sciences is a sector of critical importance to the economy of Glasgow and the West of Scotland. It is one of six key economic sectors that was
identified by the Glasgow Economic Commission and has formed one of the work streams of the Glasgow Economic Leadership, which came from the Commission’s findings. Recent developments in the
sector mean that Glasgow and the West of Scotland is increasingly being recognised internationally as a major global player in the field. Yet, curiously, this is not yet recognised by everyone, with many still tending to think of health and life sciences being concentrated in other parts of Scotland. However, the quality and scale of
the operations and their ability to contribute significantly to the growth of our economy, to be at
the leading edge of research and produce scientific breakthroughs and to improve the health of the general population is remarkable. These groundbreaking activities are sited in a
number of key locations in a bio corridor from the BioCity Scotland at Newhouse in Lanarkshire through all the life sciences sites in Glasgow, including at the West of Scotland Science Park at Garscube, the Beatson Institute at Glasgow University, Life Technologies at Inchinnan to the GlaxoSmithKline facility in Irvine in Ayrshire. The jewel in the crown will
be the world-class Glasgow South Hospital Campus, the largest
teaching hospital in Europe. We have noted with enthusiasm that
funding from the Scottish Funding Council,
Glasgow City Council, and Scottish Enterprise have all committed funds to help create the Stratified
Glasgow Business . 5

New body to represent retailers’ interests in Glasgow launches 6
Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre. The Centre, led by the University of Glasgow, will bring together universities, industry, Government and the NHS in a way that will be unique in the world. Stratified medicine is recognised as a key
strategic approach to the future diagnosis and treatment of disease. An independent economic assessment report forecasts that the Innovation Centre will generate more than 300 jobs and make an economic contribution of more than £60 million in its first five years. All those involved in the project are keen that local businesses will benefit from at least 20 per cent of this economic activity. The new insights into disease and the resulting
revolution in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and other medical conditions will lead to new start- up businesses, the growth of existing ones and will attract pharmaceutical companies to make Scotland a prime site for clinical trials. Backing the centre is a roll call of leading health and life science companies, including Life Technologies, Aridhia, GSK, Novartis, AstraZeneca Quintiles, Axis-Shield, Fios Genomics and Biopta. These new developments will draw on the riches
of the wider research base in Glasgow and the West of Scotland such as the partnership between the University of Glasgow’s Life Sciences department and the Digital Design Studio at Glasgow School of Art. All this activity will provide opportunities for
significant economic growth and we at Glasgow Chamber will do all we can to help support and promote health and life sciences in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
