Masons Run Marathon for Lifelites

completed the London Marathon in April and chose Lifelites as their nominated charity to raise funds on behalf of this worthy cause. It was undertaken in the knowledge that the monies raised go towards an excellent cause - the purchasing of IT equipment that includes state-of- the-art computers, software, and technological equipment for use by severely disabled children. The event was blessed with sunny conditions, albeit a little warm for some of the runners. It took some time to clear a pathway through the camels, rhinos, Mr Men, and others running in fancy dress before a decent pace could be established, but once set it was an enjoyable occasion.

It was a delight to arrive

at the ‘Cutty Sark’ to see it in all its splendour and new livery since fire engulfed it some years ago, which almost made one want to stop and admire it further, however, there were other matters to address. As ever, the crowds cheering and waving from both sides of the road carried the runners along, with bands, drums, pipers, amplified

music, and the shouts of ‘cheers’ from those holding aloft pints of beer from the balconies; some folk know how to torture a thirsty man!! Having crossed Tower Bridge,

traversed Canary Wharf, and returned heading for the Embankment, it was the sight of Big Ben in the distance that spurred you on knowing that only a few miles remained to the end. The crowd along the Embankment cheer you on mercilessly, but a tremendous fillip at a time when exhaustion rules. At length the finish line along The Mall loomed large, and although there is only a one kilometre dash to the end it, seemingly, appears to be moving away from you! However, you stagger through the finish line, receive your medal, and it’s off to collect belongings, and a well-earned hot bath and drink of ‘something uplifting’! Bob and Paul raised just over £2.5k towards Lifelites and take this opportunity of thanking those who supported them, with donations and good wishes. This being the first occasion the Lifelites Running Club has entered The London Marathon, it is anticipated that many more will want to run in 2014 on

behalf of the charity. Lifelites chief executive Simone

Enefer-Doy said, “Our Running Club has been a huge success since we launched it last year: Freemasons from all over the country have expressed an interest in running for Lifelites so it’s great that we’re now able to offer them the opportunities they want. “In 2014 we’ll be providing a number of opportunities throughout the year to support people in their ambitions to run 10k races, half marathons and – the jewel in the crown – the London Marathon.” Membership of the running club is free, but places at events are limited, so application will be by entry form for the running club lottery. Visit the Lifelites’ website – www.lifelites.org – for more information, or contact the charity by phone.
