ST JOHN'S LODGE 250TH

T

he 250th anniversary meeting of St John’s Lodge No 90 was held in

the Grand Temple of Mark Masons’ Hall on Wednesday 22nd May, attended by a large number of members and guests. The Worshipful Master, W.Bro Martyn Burch PAGDC, welcomed all in attendance and began the celebratory agenda. A delegation from the Association of Atholl Lodges was admitted, wearing 18th century costume and tricorn hats, and paraded their banner into the Temple. The R.W Metropolitan Grand Master was received, accompanied by a large delegation of senior officers from Metropolitan Grand Lodge.* There were several highlights

during the meeting which detailed the longevity of the Lodge, through orations and speeches, since its first warranted date of 19th May 1763. Bro. Chris Doyle, currently Inner Guard of the lodge and at only his tenth meeting, presented excerpts of the Lodge history from a new Mason’s perspective, in a dramatic and entertaining way, immediately capturing everybody’s interest. The Chairman of the Association of Atholl Lodges, W. Bro. Geoffrey Abraham SLGR, in his presentation, mapped the early beginnings of Freemasonry, including the joining of the two Grand Lodges, and concluded by presenting the Worshipful Master with an inscribed Gavel. W. Bro Andrew Kerr, the ADC of the Lodge, drew on passages from

ancient minutes, detailing noteworthy events in the Lodge’s history. The Lodge had obviously thought long and hard about the content of the day’s events, his presentation touching on the early years, proceeding through challenging times in the country and reflecting upon the changing face of Freemasonry in relation to those challenges. Normally, the Lodge would rely on more experienced Brethren to present such historical events, but as so eloquently explained, the Lodge in making these presentations relied on younger

members, which added a fresh dimension by bringing historical events right up to date. The Metropolitan Grand Chaplain,

in a most diverting Oration, added depth and levity to the presentations. The meeting culminated with the Metropolitan Grand Master RW Bro Russell Race DL offering his best wishes for continued prosperity of the Lodge and presenting an Anniversary Certificate to the Worshipful Master. The day’s events were a heartfelt

celebration of the past 250 years and were both engaging and entertaining. With the assurance of stability from new members of the Lodge and additional candidates to come, the assembled Brethren retired to enjoy the evening festive board with entertainment from singer/songwriter W. Bro David Capri. From more information on St
