arena FOREWORD
RW Bro Russell Race Metropolitan Grand Master
B
rethren and Companions all, May I welcome you to another
edition of arena with the really splendid news that once again, London masons have excelled themselves and that the latest MMC appeal on behalf of the portable CT scanner has now reached its target! I will not steal the thunder of the MetG Charity Steward's article on page 8, but I will say that I am very much looking forward to joining the trustees of the MMC, when we go to formally donate the scanner at the London Hospital on the 28th June. Did you know that the moneys given by us to the Barts and the London Trust now amount to three million pounds?! Three million pounds is a great deal of money, but equally, Barts and the London provide a lot for London and its communities. London's Freemasons wish to support the whole of our community and we can see few better ways of doing so than support for one of the
world's most respected hospitals. As an aside, will you also please respond to the MSF's request for your opinions via an electronic survey, shown on page 33? We have always tried to keep a
theme for each edition of arena, but you will, I am sure agree that the sheer breadth of London's size and diversity is starting to make this more difficult. There is just so much going on! There is the usual mix of charity and lodge/chapter news, Sports reportage, historical articles, advice from the MetGDC and MetGSuptWks and an interesting Lodge to visit but it's pretty well impossible to do justice to the activity that goes on in London. With that in mind, I would be grateful if Lodge secretaries and Scribes E could send reports about significant lodge activity and milestones to the Communications Team at
news@metgl.com so that it can be added to the Porchway news pages which are to be transferred to
our other website
www.londonmasons.org.uk later this year. As this edition goes to screen at
the end of June, I am sure that many of you are just starting to settle down for the normal summer "recess" from masonic activity and to count down to your summer holidays, either at home or abroad and with or without children! My own commitments in Craft and Chapter do slow down, but I find that somehow there is additional labour in the other orders of which I am a member which tries to fill the gap! Whether your summer is non-masonic or just differently masonic, I wish you all the best for a restful period and look forward to greeting you all in the Autumn, when it all starts up again! Happy Holidays!

of arena! As the MetGM has said above, this edition celebrates the very varied nature of masonry in London, but also marks a milestone in that for the first time, the magazine is being placed on
www.londonmasons.org.uk, our external website rather than exclusively on the Porchway intranet
W SUMMER 2013
elcome back, Brethren and Companions, to another edition
as before. Additionally, we have listened to the request for hard copies from those that just don't like reading it on their computer screens and are sending printed copies to those who wish to sign up for a subscription. May I also underline the request to assist the MSF by completing the opinion poll shown on page 33, please? With just under 2,000 Lodges and
Chapters, there is no way we can get round to contacting them all for news items unless you send them to us for
use on Facebook, Twitter, Porchway or arena. Do please send a properly permissioned photograph with your news, as they really make the articles much more appealing to readers. Finally, why not take up the invitation on page 14 and visit our guest unit, the Bank of England Lodge No. 263? As ever, please continue to send in your material to
arena@metgl.com or
news@metgl.com
