reduces a family’s overall ability to earn and save for retirement, try to make retirement savings and savings for long-term care a priority, if you can.
Look for scholarships. Although caregivers are often spouses, many in single-parent families need care from their children, who may be putting their education on the line to meet those needs. The National MS Society offers competitive scholarships for young adults who have been caregivers to a parent with multiple sclerosis.
Seek out volunteer groups. The Gerbers wanted to modify parts of their home to meet Michael’s changing mobility. They were able to get assistance from a group of retired handymen who donate their time and skills to help people in need.
Although there are days when you’ll feel overwhelmed, take a step-by-step approach and keep this inspirational advice from Michael Gerber in mind: “Participate. Make a difference. Live a life that matters.”
