that the variety of equipment we offer keeps our classes fresh and new.”

Get what you pay for Manning is constantly researching

and shopping for new equipment op- tions for her program. Because it’s of- ten a large expense, she’s found it pays to buy top quality. “When you purchase superior qual-

ity, commercial-grade equipment, it re- ally lasts and becomes a good invest- ment,” she says. Several years ago, a member sug-

gested purchasing stability balls from a big box store to help stretch the bud- get. Instead, Manning opted for a pre- mium alternative. “The 28 stability balls we bought

are still in perfect condition, and we’ve only had to top them up with air once since we bought them!” she says.

Factor in storage As you’re researching and evaluat-

ing various equipment options, don’t overlook how and where you’ll store

it all, advises Manning. “You need to have enough square footage to store it, and you also need to figure in the cost of the storage system.”

One step at a time The majority of group classes these

days incorporate some type of equip- ment, says Judi Haig Tullio, a long-time Toronto group exercise instructor. “When it’s used properly, equipment can offer a fun class with greater com- plexity,” she says. According to Haig Tullio, who also

teaches courses on group exercise for the Humber College Fitness and Health Promotion program, new in- structors should first focus on devel- oping a strong foundation of basic skills. “They need to know how to educate,

motivate and cue, plus understand how to communicate using the music’s phrasing and tempo,” she says. “Once they have the basics mastered, then they can take on the challenge of add- ing in equipment.”
