Blue roofs are specifically designed to attenuate and possibly store water.
The advances in membranes technology over the last few years has meant an increase in lifespan and greater resistance to movement and water ingress. This technology means that there is a real opportunity to maximise the benefits of capturing rainfall and attenuating storm activity at rooftop level.
The benefits of this are:- Rainfall is attenuated at its first landfall as suggested in the CIRIA SuDS chain
Reduced reliance on sub surface drainage systems and hence cost reduction and a maximisation of land use potential
Opportunities for grey water re-use within the building or even water park play areas in schools and educational facilities
Irrigation for living roofs where required
Blue roofs can include areas purely for water storage, recreational opportunities or just a water maze for storm attenuation, or even to assist with cooling the building and acting to reduce the burden of the HVAC system on warmer days.
Blue roofs that are used for temporary rooftop storage can be classified as ‘active’ or ‘passive’ depending on the
types of control devices used to regulate drainage of water from the roof.
Using a mixture of Wallingford design principles and recognized roof drainage standards, enables the correct storm return period to be established and to ensure that the drainage outlets are capable of shredding the water from the roof space in a timely manner without overburdening the ground level drainage system. from the roof, but by considering the roof space, and its finishes as part of the attenuation package could conceivably save money in the long term. However, you need to have a holistic approach to the design of the roof space and its technical purpose as part of a SUDs strategy.
