Evolution in Concrete Masonry Finishes

Walls

The development of the Concrete Facing brick has made rapid strides over the period since the last World War

Approximately 70 years ago the first programmable computer was designed and now we have computing power in the palm of our hand which is infinitely superior to that of the 1940’s.

In the same way that computing has advanced so have techniques in the manufacture of concrete products and none more so than in the range of concrete masonry units developed and produced by Edenhall Ltd.

Whilst the company is probably best known for its choice of concrete bricks these are only the tip of an iceberg in a large inventory of products which range from the lowly common brick through to the highest quality bespoke wall finishes.

Returning to the concrete brick, this has developed from a simple utility product, of which the company still supplies millions, through to a modern, competitively priced masonry walling unit which is comparable to the highest priced clay alternatives.

The development of the concrete facing brick, has like computers, made rapid strides over the period since the last World War. Initially it was produced as a single coloured plain brick but this was improved by the introduction of two and three coloured multi effects in the 1970’s. From then progress was made by the incorpora- tion of a ‘hearting’ process which not only imparted a tertiary colour but also allowed the incorporation of a polymer finish onto the face of the brick thus ensuring that the brick remained colour stable with minimal efflorescence.

Further improvements led to the manufacture of bricks with a Shotblasted or Split faced finish as well as the Sandstock collection which simulated a hand made slop moulded brick.

The last two years has seen the introduction of the Coastal and Kingdom range. This uses a technique which marginally textures the face of the brick whilst still maintaining the polymer finish. The result is a sand faced unit with infinite permutation of colour and tone. The production method enables Edenhall to not only offer a range of bricks which are virtually indistinguishable from the clay counterparts but gives the added benefit of being able to offer bespoke colours such as green, cream and

white as well as other pastel shades - something the clay producers can only envy.

In addition it enables the company to manufacture bricks which can match those difficult or obsolete offerings from the likes of LBC or Calcium Silicate manufacturers.

The introduction of the Coastal and Kingdom Collections enables Edenhall to be a world leader in the innovative development of Concrete Masonry bricks, which like the computers of 70 years ago bear no resemblance to the initial offering of plain grey concrete commons.

Facing bricks are only a part of the story. Edenhall have also been to the forefront in the introduction of other unique masonry units. As part of their Architectural Cast Stone portfolio Edenhall offer a selection of textured finishes which are included in their Ashlar collection. These unique textures mimic those derived by machining or treating natural stone but without the excessive cost incurred.

However, the most exciting products are manufactured by Cast Advanced Concrete and marketed as MASS concrete surfaces. MASS offer high-tech concrete surfaces which are hand crafted yet are contemporary. They are widely used by leading Architects and Designers for their unique and individual appearance combined with remarkable versatility derived from their technical properties of high strength, thin section, lightweight components.

Bespoke concrete worktops and furniture, concrete wall panels, floor tiles, stair treads and signage are produced using a patented micro technology. Finishes range from a sensuous silky matt sheen to rougher looking raw concrete, all available in polished textured or patterned finishes. From the natural greys of concrete to blacks and white, MASS can offer an unlimited range of colours. Truly the market leader, MASS is recognised for its product development innovation and exceptional customer service. The design flexibility of MASS makes it suitable for any application that strives for an exceptional and striking aesthetic.

The list of clients and their prospects range from those as diverse as Virgin Airlines to the National Gallery - surely the most innovative and diverse portfolio in concrete.

All these components are available from Edenhall, a tribute to the imagination and expertise of a company which can truly be described as evolutionary and expansive in its search for even more exciting products in Concrete Walling.
