Updated RIBA Approved Floors Screeds CPD launched by Flowcrete

Flowcrete has updated a popular RIBA Approved CPD, which is designed to help specifiers get the level best from flooring screeds.

Entitled ‘Floor Screeds - How To Avoid Failure’ the presentation outlines the different types of floor screeds and their applications, identifies areas of failure, and offers advice on the avoidance of problems.

The CPD also offers recommendations for the correct specification of sand and cement based screeds.

Aimed predominantly at architects specifying screed systems in commercial environments, the CPD also caters for construction managers and other property professionals.

Alan Dean, Managing Director of Flowcrete, said, “Screeds are hidden away and less visible than many other construction products, but nevertheless have a vital role to play within the construction sector - in both new-build and refurbishment developments.

“Modern construction programmes place great demands on the products they use and today’s floor screed systems are no exception, needing to be fast, strong, safe and able to cope with the rigorous techniques and methods undertaken throughout the world.

“Ultimately, this updated CPD helps ensure specifiers and those on-site get the best performance underfoot and a firm platform for their project.”

For more than 40 years, Isocrete Floor Screeds - which are manufactured by Flowcrete - have been the product of choice for architects and specifiers on some of the world’s largest and most prestigious projects.

All over the globe, Isocrete has been used extensively across a broad range of developments, including airports, hotels, hospitals, residential sites, offices, shopping centres, schools, colleges and universities.

Flat Pan - high profile

RigiSystems Ziplok has been used in a flat pan format to create a traditional yet contemporary feel at Addenbrooke’s Children’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Removing the miniribs from the standard Ziplok profiles creates the pleasing aesthetics of the structure. Use of a triple skin, fully supported insulation system ensures that the roof

sheets maintain their shape while also catering for the acoustic and thermal requirements of the building.

Penetrations such as wind catchers and rooflights are welded into place to preserve the integrity of the roof while maintaining the clean lines and aesthetic appeal.

Designer TT energy saving features Haverland has responded to growing concerns about spiralling energy costs and therefore added a built-in, energy monitoring facility to their new Designer TT radiators.

Haverland’s market research showed that when consumers can actually see their real time usage levels, they invariably reduce energy consumption - without compromising thermal comfort.

This development follows Haverland’s ‘Drop One Degree’ eco initiative last winter, when a major international financial services group instructed their Facility Managers to reduce radiator temperature settings by just one degree at their corporate HQ. This simple task enabled the high profile company to save several million Euro’s on their energy costs.

This refinement, used in conjunction with Haverland’s high precision, energy management and control systems further enhances the company’s reputation as the world’s leading innovator and manufacturer of energy saving, electric heating solutions.

Solid wall insulation

The ongoing issue of hard-to-treat walls in the UK can be overcome using Spacetherm - an ultra-thin insulation for thermal upgrades saving valuable space without altering the exterior fabric of the building.

One project that benefitted from this ultra-thin insulation was at 20 Follet Street, Tower Hamlets, London. Using innovative technologies the solid wall Victorian House in a Conservation area was upgraded with an 80% carbon emission reduction. The historic nature and context of the house, its position fronting directly onto the street and the proximity of adjacent buildings have played a key part in the selection of material and renewable technologies. This retrofit solution enables the resident to remain in occupation of the house.

Whole house modelling was undertaken using SAP in conjunction with extended SAP worksheet. AutoCAD produced plans and elevations were used to assist with visualisation and detailed design.
