200-year technology that is saving energy, time, waste and future generations

Natural Cement Distribution Ltd’s products are based on a natural cement that has been used throughout the world for almost 200 years.

There were many manufacturers of natural cements throughout the world but because of their different characteristics and with the development of the portland cement rotary kiln, production had ceased in nearly all countries by 1935.

Since the start of production of the natural cement binder, this production has never ceased, resulting in almost 200 years knowledge about the labour saving, waste reducing, chemical resistance and environmental benefits of the products. Natural Cement Distribution Ltd use this original binder in the production of all its products.

The lack of chemicals in the products ensures that there is nothing that can leach out to affect wildlife, fish or to contaminate the ground and cause problems for our future generations.

With the products all being simple component products requiring only the addition of water, waste is at a minimum as there is no need for primers, bonding agents, curing agents and all the waste that is normally associated with these other requirements.

The products have been extensively independently tested through many years by such organisations as the Building Research Establishment, Thames Water, Leeds University Civil Engineering Materials Unit and several independent testing companies.

The approval and use of the products by organisations such as Network Rail, Transport for London, Canals & River Trust (formerly British Waterways), Drinking Water Inspectorate and UK Coal, is testament to the quality of the products.

The easy to understand product literature together with the ease of use ensures that the person using the products does not experience difficulty in the mixing and application.

We operate a CPD presentation programme as well as a product users training scheme for both the specifier and the operatives in the field.

After the operatives have successfully completed the training course they are issued a Certificate of Competence that incorporates a photograph of the operative and subject to the company satisfying some financial criteria. 10-year insurance backed warranties can be issued by the company for waterproofing and concrete repairs.

Stirling Lloyd has played its part in a major flood protection scheme in Beverley, East Yorkshire, after its Integritank HF waterproofing membrane was used to protect a new large capacity storage tank.

The flood protection and mitigation scheme has been developed by Yorkshire Water and local authority, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, following several years of serious flooding caused by storm water run-off overwhelming the drainage system around the Pasture Terrace area of Beverley.

Preventative measures involved increasing the capacity of the sewerage system, the erection of a floor protection wall and the construction of the new 80,000 litre detention tank known as ‘Beverley Shaft’ to hold run-off water until the storm has passed and the drainage system has returned to equilibrium. Pumps within the tank then return the contaminated water back to the drains for treatment.

The storage shaft’s construction adjacent to a drinking water aquifer meant there was a requirement for it to be lined with a durable waterproofing membrane to contain the contaminated sewage and run-off water and prevent it from reaching the drinking water supply. As a result, design and build contractor, Mott MacDonald Bentley specified the application of some 500m2 of the Integritank HF system.

Designed specifically for installation in confined spaces such as tunnels and shafts, Integritank HF is a spray applied polymer membrane that combines rapid application and cure with high impermeability. The application of a fast curing penetrative primer, allowing application to a damp substrate, was followed by two high contrast membrane coats, each of 1.5mm, with the first coat pigmented yellow and the second, pigmented white. The contrasting colours help the sprayer to ensure all areas are adequately covered.

In addition to the visual guide provided by two colour-coded coats, the thickness of each coat is measured during application by wet film thickness tests to verify that the membrane is being installed as specified. Post application, while the contractor is still on-site, integrity is confirmed by ‘holiday testing’ ensuring a defect free, waterproof surface is achieved.

As serious flooding continues to plague more and more regions of the UK, completion of the Beverley Shaft as part of the Pasture Terrace flood prevention project has delivered major benefits to the residents of this part of Beverley. Meanwhile, the Integritank HF system has played its own critical role, providing effective containment of run-off water from the hills above Pasture Terrace to protect the local community from flooding whilst also preventing the leaking of containments into the drinking aquifer below.
