LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
BY LAURA SHELTON, CMP
Spring Into DATIA S
pring is FINALLY here—new flow- ers emerging, people cleaning out their closets, and vacation planning
beginning. For some reason when the tem- perature starts rising people’s lives emerge and start to expand. We get out more oſten, have a newfound energy and, like bears, “come out of hibernation.” I’m inviting every DATIA member to
come out of hibernation. We recently held Board elections and were impressed with absolutely every Board applicant. Unfor- tunately, we had three times as many ap- plicants as we had open seats. Te DATIA Nominating Commitee had a tough task ahead of them, but selected a great slate of new Board Members. One deciding factor—activity within DATIA in terms of Commitee and volunteer service. As a member of multiple associations
myself, I am always looking for ways to connect with colleagues, share experiences, and learn from others. Leaning from others tends to be easy—you just have to make a commitment to listen and read. Sharing your knowledge or lessons learned tends to be harder since there is always the worry of how people will perceive you and what you have to say. While scary, I submited an article for publication aſter a talk with colleagues who seemed to like my ideas. Tat one published article led to numerous opportu- nities including speaking engagements and interviews in national industry publications. While I don’t want to talk about me, what I want to instill in everyone is this:
• Each of us has our own experiences and knowledge that can be shared with others;
• Despite fears of rejection, usually people do want to hear your perspective and insight;
• Taking the leap to put yourself our there can reap major rewards. So, as we start the “renewal” season of
the year, I invite each and every DATIA member to “Spring into DATIA”. I encour- age you to share your experiences with other members through writing an article for DATIA focus, presenting at the 2014 conference, presenting a webinar, or just geting together with local colleagues to share ideas. It truly is a rewarding experi- ence to share ideas. With the down economy some have the
thought that they need to keep their ideas close to the vest and that is true for some innovative, proprietary items. But for most: collaborating, sharing, and partnering can provide not only new insights, but also new referrals and clients. So, to all, I ask that you Spring into DA-
TIA, Spring into Sharing, and Spring into new ways to move your company and the industry forward. ❚
Best,
Laura Shelton DATIA Executive Director
