GETTING TO KNOW
BY ADINA YOUNG Getting to Know
How did you get started in this industry? I was the program
manager for a statewide nonprofit prevention
initiative in school safety when several drug busts were made in our local high schools involving black tar heroin. Te team at Conspire! invited us to join their Intention Prevention town hall meetings in order to provide educational resources to students and parents about adolescent drug use & prevention measures. Te partnership between agencies was a natural fit in our shared passion for healthy communities, and we continued building the relation- ships while finding ways to coordinate efforts. Litle did I realize that a short time later, as grant funding became scarce for the nonprofit, I would find a home with my friends at Conspire! My experience in program management, corporate train- ing, community partnerships and board policy development translated well into the corporate needs for compliance, but I did have a whole, new world to absorb in learning 49 CFR Part 40. I’ve always been a very passion-driven person in my career, so I viewed this industry through the lens of safeguarding wellness and safety for every employer and employee we come into con- tact with, which leaves no stone unturned for those who need our services. I am excited about every opportunity to educate those who are unaware of the importance of our industry and to simplify screening services for those who find it a bit daunt- ing. I love coming to work every day and I am proud of what we do!
Jo McGuire, Conspire!
Congratulations on being nominated to DATIA’s Board of Directors. Why did you feel it was important to apply? First of all, I believe in the DATIA mis-
sion and I value the support and guid- ance that is so important to our industry. Direct involvement is important to me because I believe the single most effective way to strengthen our membership base and increase our collective expertise is to remain on the cuting edge of drug and alcohol testing as a unified effort. DATIA helps set the standard for best practices in an ever-evolving culture that impacts us all. With what is currently happening in Colorado pertaining to marijuana legaliza- tion, I applied because there are lessons to be learned from the continuing legalization efforts that are pertinent to our industry and will help us address the concerns of those whom we serve.
As the Director of Compliance and Corporate Training at Conspire!, what do you find most challenging about this role? Overcoming public perceptions that
drug and alcohol testing is punitive rather than preventative is probably the greatest challenge. We represent a wellness-focused industry that increases productivity in the workplace and I believe we all work very hard to overcome negative cultural con- notations about what we do. But I also love the challenge of helping people view their need for our services in a positive light.
We understand that you are incredibly active on a task force for Amendment 64: The Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act of 2012 in Colorado. What does this task force hope to accomplish? We have been tasked with creating a
suggested regulatory framework that our Governor will provide to the state legisla- ture for their consideration in carrying out the mandates of the Amendment to our Colorado State Constitution. Te work is daunting as many of the items seem to have few or no solutions outside of federal law which supersedes this amendment. However, in order to comply with what is now viewed as Coloradoan’s constitutional right to use marijuana, we must make an atempt to regulate such things as: taxation and revenue, fee structures, banking, defining impairment, public vs. private use, employment law, the role of local governing bodies, product stan- dards and labeling, etc. Te goal is to enact this Amendment 64 in accordance with state constitutional law to the best of our ability,
Each edition of DATIA focus will include a Q&A from a DATIA Board Member, Staff Person, Spotlighted Member or Course Instructor. It is our hope that this enables our readers to be better acquainted with DATIA and all of the people that help make it such a successful operation. Stay tuned each edition to meet a new industry peer!
