Get Organised
As the old saying goes, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly! Set up a simple spreadsheet to keep track of which competitions you’ve entered, and any prizes that you win. This way, you’ll be able to see which ones you’re more successful at and where you should spend most of your time.
You should also stock up on essentials such as stamps and envelopes, just in case you spot a fabulous draw that closes soon.
Set up a Competition Email Address A lot of competitions require entrants to hand over some personal details in order for them to get in touch. However, this information is also sometimes used in order to contact you about the company in future.
Competition forms tend to have a check box for you to opt-out or in of any of these future marketing messages but it’s worth setting up a separate competition email address just in case.
Get a Competition SIM Card Getting a competition SIM card is great for exactly the same reason as a new email address. Most people don’t want companies to have their main mobile number and risk being bombarded with texts and phone calls looking to sell to them.
Stick to the Rules
It’s amazing just how easy it is to get yourself disqualified, just because you haven’t read the rules properly. You know those tales about students getting zero marks in an exam because they used blue ink instead of black? Well, it’s a bit like that.
Read the small print, and pay particular attention to the closing date. Keep your eyes open for trick questions too – your first answer isn’t always the right one!
Learn from the Experts Compers have quite a close knit little community, so watch out for forums where you can pick up hints and tips.
In terms of the big boys, Martin Dove is a retired lecturer living in Scarborough, and is a bit of a legend in the world of comping. He’s even won a yacht! He’s written 3 books on the subject, so keep your eyes open for them in bookshops or online.
If you take comping seriously and follow these tips, you’re pretty much guaranteed to win some really great prizes. Yes, it’s often a case of being lucky, but when you’re entering a lot on a regular basis, you’re increasing your chances massively. So stop moaning about ‘not being the lucky type’ and just give it a go!
