During the Great War he served on the 2nd class cruiser Talbot, July 1914-July 1918. Demobilised in March 1919. With copied service paper.

John Henry Smith was born in Plumstead, Kent on 18 August 1863. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 30 October 1884. Awarded the long service medal in 1895 when on Penguin. Served on Barfleur, October 1898-January 1902, seeing service in China. He attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in February 1903 and was pensioned in November 1906. With onset of war he returned to the Navy, serving at President, December 1914-June 1917. In the latter month he was promoted to Acting Artificer Engineer ‘to assist Engineer Overseer at Messrs. Yarrow & Co, Scotstoun.’ With copied service paper and research.

William Thomas Martin was born in Perranrwothal, Cornwall on 2 September 1866. Entering the Royal Navy in April 1890, he attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class in June 1909. Served on Highflyer, December 1899-November 1908. Pensioned in May 1912, he returned to the service for the Great War, serving on the 1st class cruiser Argonaut, August 1914-September 1915; his later postings were all on shore bases. With copied service papers and roll extract.
Joseph Edward Mace was born in Poplar, London on 26 January 1869. Entering the Royal Navy in October 1895, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1911. Served on Pique, February 1900-August 1903, seeing service in China for which he was awarded a medal. Served throughout the Great War, based at Leander and Vivid, aboard the destroyer Albatross and torpedo boat T.B.035, January 1914-July 1918. Awarded the 1914-15 Star trio. Demobilised on 17 March 1919. With copied service papers.

Served on the pre-dreadnought battleship Lord Nelson, July 1913-September 1917, being awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1914. Served on the sloop Clio, October 1919-August 1920, seeing service on and off the coast of Somaliland. Pensioned ashore on 26 May 1921. With copied service paper.
