Leonard James Needham was born in Plumstead, Kent on 16 August 1869. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 7 December 1894 and was confirmed in that rank in March 1898. Promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in September 1899 when on Pegasus, he saw service in the Boer War when on Sappho, August 1900-September 1901. Needham was advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in September 1903 when at Pembroke; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1906 when on Cadmus and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in December 1910 when on Triton. Needham served throughout the Great War, serving on the armoured cruiser Sutlej, July 1914-August 1915; for the rest of the wartime period he was based at St. George and Pembroke. With copied service papers.

John James Williams was born in Falmouth, Cornwall on 30 October 1873. A Boiler Maker by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 28 October 1895. He served on Barrosa, July 1897-May 1901, being confirmed in his rank in September 1897, promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in October 1898 and seeing service in the Boer War. Further promotions followed, being advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in October 1903 on Defiance; Acting C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1904 at Vivid II; C.E.R. A. 2nd Class in April 1905 on Sirius and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in March 1910 at Vivid II. He served throughout the Great War, mostly based at Vivid II. With copied service paper.

Robert Platt was born in Tring, Hertfordshire on 23 April 1876. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 7 January 1898. Serving on Philomel, December 1898-July 1902, he was confirmed in his rank in February 1899, advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in January 1901, and served on the vessel during the Boer War. He was advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1905 when on Tenedos and E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1910 when on Leander. Platt was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. when serving on the sloop Fantome, May 1911-May 1913. During this same period he was briefly disrated to E.R.A. 2nd Class for disobedience. Recovering his rank Platt served throughout the Great War, serving on the destroyer, Manly, January 1915-April 1917 and May 1917-June 1918. For most of the war H.M.S. Manly served with the Harwich Force. With copied service paper.

Thomas Birrel Baird was born in Burghead, Elgin, Scotland on 30 June 1862. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 3 April 1884. Serving on Watchful, August 1884-July 1888, he was was confirmed in that rank in August 1885 and advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in April 1887. Promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1891 when on Conquest; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1896 when on Bonaventure and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1902 when on Redbreast. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1894, he was pensioned in March 1906. Baird returned to service in August 1914 but was invalided with arterio sclerosis on 8 December 1915. David Charles Nute was born in Ford, Devonport on 12 December 1868. An Engine-Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 10 January 1890 and was confirmed in that rank in July 1891. Promoted to E.R.A.3rd Class in January 1893 when on Hyacinth; E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1897 when on Howe; and C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1899 when at Vivid II. He served on Magicienne, October 1899-June 1901, seeing service in the Boer War. Nute attained the rank of C.E.R. A. 1st Class in April 1905 when on Challenger, on which ship he also received the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. He was serving on the armoured cruiser Sutlej, May 1908-November 1909 when she took part in the the rescue operations at Messina following the disastrous earthquake of 28 December 1908. Nutt was pensioned on 12 January 1912 but returned to service in the Great War. He was serving on the old battleship Ocean when she struck a mine and sank during operations in the Dardanelles, 18 March 1915. Surviving the experience, Nute served for the remainder of the war based at Vivid II and III. With copied service papers.
