William John Woolgar was born in Woolwich on 28 January 1841. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 17 May 1868; attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in January 1881 when on Fly but returned to an E.R.A. in May 1883 when on Alexandra. Pensioned in April 1888. With copied service papers.

William Todman Pratt was born in Malta on 10 October 1859. An Engine Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 31 May 1881. He served on the gunboat Condor, April 1882-December 1883, which famously took part in the bombardment of Alexandria on 11 July 1882.


In the action, the Condor, commanded by Lord Charles Beresford, went to the assistance of the Temeraire which had grounded during the attack; she then sailed close in to attack the forts at Maza-el-Kanat and Fort Marabout. When the guns of the latter fort were silenced, the flagship signalled ‘Well done Condor’.


Pratt attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in August 1893 and was pensioned ashore on 27 May 1901. With copied service paper. 878

John Henry Coad was born in Stoke Damerell, Devon on 26 October 1859. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 16 June 1881. Served on the battleship Inflexible at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11 July 1882. Deemed to be the most powerful battleship of her day, she sported four 16in muzzle loading guns. She fired 86 shells of this calibre at the Ras-el-Tin, Mex, Ada and Pharos forts and sustained the most damage to a British ship in the action - some of it caused by the concussion from her massive guns! She, like the minute Condor, received a ‘Well Done’ from the flagship. Coad attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in May 1893 when on Undaunted. Pensioned on 18 June 1901 but recalled for service in 1915. Clement George Pitts was born in Weymouth, Dorset on 1 April 1849. He entered the Royal Navy as Blacksmith’s Crew on 4 March 1871. Promoted to Blacksmith in August 1873 on Spiteful; Acting E.R.A. in June 1881 on Asia and E.R.A. in July 1882 on Euryalus. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1881 when on Asia. He died on 16 February 1925. With copied service papers.

Alfred Henry Eddy, born in St. Just, Cornwall on 1 December 1860. Entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 7 June 1882. Served on Orion, July 1882-May 1883; Alexandra, May 1883-May 1884; Invincible, May-September 1884 and Monarch, October 1884-August 1885, seeing service in Egypt. Attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in November 1894. As such he earned the Queen’s South Africa Medal without clasp for service on Gibraltar, March 1901-May 1902, during the Boer War. Pensioned from the service in July 1902. With copied service paper.

John Bailey was born in Salford, Lancashire on 1 November 1848. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 25 November 1875. Served on Iris, December 1883-March 1887, during which time he qualified for the Egypt Medal. Attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in April 1887 and was pensioned in December 1895. With copied service paper.

Henry Turnbull was born in Clifton, Ireland on 17 December 1868. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in April 1894 and attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in October 1909. During the Great War he served on torpedo boat TB.115, December 1915-March 1916 and the cruiser Chatham, May 1916-August 1918. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1908 when on Blenheim. Demobilised in 1919. With copied service papers.

William John Young was born in Fratton, Portsmouth on 18 May 1871. He entered into the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 27 February 1895. Serving on Scout, October 1895-December 1898, seeing service in the Sudan and being appointed to E.R.A. 4th Class in July 1896 and E.R.A. 3rd Class in February 1898. Attained the rank of E.R.A. 1st Class in February 1907. Served on Euryalus, September 1907-December 1909 - the ship providing men for the rescue operations following the Messina Earthquake. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1910 when at Fisgard. Was based at Dolphin, December 1913-July 1916. Young died of myocarditis at Haslar Hospital on 27 July 1916. With copied service papers.
