Michael Joseph Downing was born in Middleton, Cork on 29 December 1867. A Fitter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 30 January 1890 and was confirmed in that rank in May 1892. Served on Widgeon, September 1893-November 1896, being advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in November 1893 and serving in expeditions along the Benin and Brass Rivers during 1894-95. Downing was promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in November 1897 when on Howe. Serving on Diamond, January 1907-July 1909, he was swiftly advanced to E.R.A. 1st Class in July 1907; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in March 1908, and C. E.R.A. 1st Class in November 1908. Served on Fox, May 1910-November 1911, seeing service in the Persian Gulf. During the Great War he served on Melbourne, September 1913-October 1914; Cerberus, October 1914-July 1915, and (H.M.A.S.) Penguin, July 1915- February 1916. He was invalided from the service on 16 February 1916 suffering from chronic alcoholism. Downing re-entered the Royal Navy as a C.E.R.A. in April 1916 and continued to serve until 15 August 1919.

John Thomas Barrett was born in Portsmouth on 26 January 1864. A Coppersmith by trade, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 16 May 1885. Serving on Alexandra, February 1886-June 1889, he was confirmed in his rank in June 1886 and advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in May 1888. He was promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in May 1892 when on Imperieuse and to E.R.A. 1st Class in May 1897 when at Victory II. Serving on Powerful, June 1897-June 1900, he was promoted to C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1899; awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. and later served in the waters off South Africa during the Boer War. In November 1900 he was commissioned an Artificer Engineer and was further promoted to Chief Artificer Engineer in November 1905 and Engineer Lieutenant in June 1916. During 1917-19 he is listed as serving at the ‘Dockyard - Haulbowline’. In addition to the above he was awarded the 1914-15 Star trio.

George McVicar Tarbet was born in Glasgow on 19 September 1896. Entering the Royal Navy in March 1899, he served on Niobe as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class, September 1899-October 1900. He attained the rank of E.R.A. 1st Class in March 1911. Served on Warrior, November 1912-February 1915; Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1914. Later served on Thrasher, Vivid, P.13 and P.75. Pensioned in 1921.


H.M.S. Warrior was an armoured cruiser; badly damaged at the battle of Jutland, she foundered while being towed, 1 June 1916. With copied service paper.
