and close them, check out the nice shelves, lights, and cool gizmos that R & D has come up with for that year. Te real challenge is accommodating the depth of these behmoths. Tere are refrigerators out there that including the handles measure 35-36 inches or more. Tat’s a foot deeper than all that nice cabinetry and granite! Keeping the magic numbers of 24 inches and 25½ inches in mind before you go refrigerator shopping will save us all a big headache later.

If you choose stainless steel, the sides of the appliance will not be covered, not with stainless steel, but oſten black or grey paint, which is not atractive. To address this, we can make the beautiful wood returns along- side the refrigerator a bit deeper and “pull” the base cabinets and counter tops deeper to improve the aes- thetics. If you have lots of room, we have some tricks to cover everything but the doors. I have even seen

contractors cut into the 2 x 4 wall behind the fridge to create a bit more space and “scooch” the fridge in further. In short, we can do some special planning if that huge refrigerator is mandatory for you, but you still may not like the way it looks.

Most appliance salespeople are probably not thinking about how your refrigerators will look in your kitchen. Tey’re focusing on selling you the 26 cubic foot stor- age unit of your dreams. Just take the time and effort to figure out exactly how your appliances will look and work within your new cabinetry and counter tops be- fore you buy. To do that, work with a designer who, not only captures your dreams, but understands how all the moving parts of your kitchen design need to fit together.
