R BEFORE
ebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) is a nonprofit organization that repairs the homes of low-income county
residents. The person in need may be, for exam- ple, a homeowner living next door who is trapped because she is no longer able to safely leave her home; you know, the nice neighbor who has lived on your street for 50 years, whose husband has died and children live in other states. She’s the neighbor whom you haven’t seen in many months. People like are all around us but are sometimes invisible.
If you went into this widow’s home, you might real- ize that, because she can’t negotiate her steps to the second level , she is sleeping on her sofa. She hasn’t bathed in a long time because she can’t safely get in and out of her tub. Te physical obstacles she faces pose no hazard to you or me but the risk of injury she faces in a home that no longer meets her needs have greatly diminished her quality of life and may even jeopardize her health.
Tis past year we helped a gentleman who is living as a double-leg amputee. He uses a wheel chair. During

our first site visit, we examined the tub he bent over to take a sponge bath. Imagine doing this for 11 years!
We couldn’t! So we brought in a team of volunteers who guted his bathroom and provided him with a roll-in shower where he can bathe, comfortably and safely. Imagine what that must have felt like.
This isn’t the typical image you find on these pages, is it?
Since 1989, RTMC has been working tirelessly to make homes safer, healthier and more accessible. We help those who cannot afford to have the work done for themselves. You can pitch in too!
