suggested replacing the nasty old opaque glass shower door (with its rusted metal trim) and a shower wall with frameless glass to open it up and showcase new, distinctive tile he would install to add dramatic effect. I liked the concept, and gave the go-ahead to draft up a design.

As the design emerged, Randy’s wife, Patty, the company president, suggested installing mirrors behind the corner sink to better capture and re- flect light, to make the room appear larger and have more depth. The mirrors would be bordered with the same tile used in the shower, to tie the design together. Patty also suggested that, to both save and add space, we should build a niche with a glass shelf into the mirror to hold soaps and perhaps a scented candle, because the room was too small to accommodate a traditional vanity or countertop. Cleaning supplies and the like could be stored in a decorative cabinet above the toilet to keep the floor roomy and open.

Finding All the Right Pieces The design was compelling. We signed the con- tract in April, and then began my task of driving around to vendors to select the tile, sink, toilet, and lighting. I was lucky: I had been through this process before with a different contractor for an- other job, so I knew what to expect: how over- whelming it could be to walk into a showroom, see rooms and rooms filled with beautiful tiles and sinks and then have to choose among them.

I wanted to stay within my budget, which allowed $6 square foot for tile, so I limited myself to pe- rusing only tiles that fell within that price range. Fortunately, I fell in love with the first tile panel I saw at the first vendor I visited, and halted my search there. I followed the same strategy with the toilet—the first one I saw fit my requirement of being “comfort height” to accommodate my long legs, and I selected it on the spot.
