Grey Coat 8 Year 11 career workshops

On 25 October all Year 11 students took part in a careers morning. It started with talks from women about their present career, and the career paths that got them to where they are now. The students chose three selected workshops spanning Medical, Social Care, Media, Performing Arts, Journalism, Beauty, Fashion, Art, Events, Teaching, Sports, Science, Veterinary, Police, Apprenticeships, Further and Higher Education and Law. On the morning of 25 October the whole of Year 11 got a chance to visit three professional workshops. The reason for these workshops was to give the year group an idea of what different jobs entailed and how one would achieve a certain profession. This also gave many students who were unsure of what to do in the future new ideas. I chose Medical, Veterinary and Law workshops. I really enjoyed all three; the medical workshop was more about the practical sides of being a doctor. We had to take fake blood from a plastic hand which was really fun and realistic as well as take each other’s blood pressure which I did not understand until that session.

The veterinary workshop was more a question and answer session about the profession. We then had to identify parts of animals in bags without being able to see. This gave us an idea of how hard it would be to be a vet.

Lastly I went to the Law workshop which was really interesting and useful. This session was all about how to become a lawyer and why it is an excellent profession. I found out a lot in this session about the range of cases, what the barristers wear and the origins of the wig and gown. Overall it was a very interesting and helpful morning, and the sessions really gave me an idea on what career I want to do in the future.
