Grey Coat 6 Issue 25: November 2012 Annual Prize Giving Ceremony

A full house listened to the singing of Schuman by Charlotte Vyvyan and jazz by Megan Bird followed by Jermaine Amissah who played John Horle’s ‘Song for Mother ‘ on the saxophone before the annual Prize Giving Ceremony on Thursday, 15 November . After the Chairman of the Governing Body, Julian Slater, ACA, had welcomed the students and parents to the Great Hall, the Headteacher presented her illustrated Review of the Year. In addition to drawing attention to the splendid exam results, Ms Maddrell made reference to the many trips and activities enjoyed by GCH students in the past year. These delights ranged from 40 students visiting the US of A to the 35 who tackled the Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition on Dartmoor. The school’s street party for the Queen’s Jubilee and the celebration of the German Exchange with the Annette von Droste Hulshoffe in Munster (the second longest in the UK) received a special mention as their 60th Anniversaries were recalled. Contributions to art exhibitions and participation in sport also featured.

The Head Girl, Esther Ounounou, began her review with the declaration that ‘becoming a prefect was one of the best things that had happened to her during her time at GCH’. Whilst Esther recalled the success of the Easter talent show, Errol Moore-Amaadzie described ‘the Year 7 and 8 game system’ which involved the prefects playing games on the netball court with the 2 youngest year groups. Errol ‘gained a massive thrill from the hectic nature of being Deputy Head Boy’, whether supervising the paired reading scheme which has aided over 100 lower school pupils or the Textile Club which has highlighted the need to be more eco- friendly. Aneeqa Rahman’s role within Upper School has involved intra-form competitions and developing students’ problem-solving skills. As well as supervising the new library at lunchtime there has been peer- mentoring for sixth formers based on the buddy system already operating for Years 10 and 11.

Other responsibilities under Aneeqa’s umbrella have been Black History Week, Christian Union debating and charity events on behalf of the local community. Organising the Cambridge College clues was a key induction week task but ‘Passion’ was the word repeated in Shayane Lacey’s speech. This emotion was applied first to Debating Society’s opinions on individuals from Julian Assange to Mitt Romney and then to the new clubs for Politics and Physics and extended to causes, charities and creative activities
