Grey Coat 10 Science news

Last week 10 girls from Year 10 attended the “Unconference” at the Royal Institution in Piccadilly. Students across the UK were given the opportunity to shape the way in which Science affects public policy and decision making in Government. It took place in the same lecture theatre where Sir Isaac Newton once gave one of his famous speeches, and it challenged young people to discuss relationships between science and the economy. The day’s brainstorming culminated in the presentation of a series of ideas presented by the students to a panel from the Government, Science and Business Leaders.

Miss Morris went along with the girls and was extremely impressed with their conduct throughout the day and the high level of maturity they displayed. Jessica Kelly in particular impressed everyone by addressing the entire conference of 150 students (mainly Y11, 12 and 13) and at least 20 journalists about the ideas her discussion group had come up with during their brainstorm session “Can Science Solve the economic crisis?”

The event was extremely rewarding and showed our young scientists that their voice really can be heard! Ms Salter

A group of Sixth Form Science students will be heading to Westminster School for another exciting instalment in the Imperial College Science Lecture series. This week’s topic is “The bio- inspired artificial pancreas for treatment of diabetes” so should be particularly interesting to those students who are interested in studying Medicine at University. The lecture series is open to all of our Sixth Form Scientists and provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with topical science issues and gain inspiration from a range of Scientists who are experts in their field. WOW Winners Kathleen Gentle, Lottie Fallis, and Cordelia Baker Hine for creating an imaginative and creative video about DNA

Congratulations to Melissa Umolo, Isabelle Parker, Nikol Gashi, Ann Muchatat, Kathleen Gentle, Lottie Fallis, Ella Ashdown and Cordelia Baker Hine who are all this month’s winners of the Science Work of the Week (WoW!).

This month their contributions range from carrying out detailed research about Emphysema, to creating an imaginative and entertaining video about DNA. As usual it is always so difficult to choose winners as there are so many wonderful pieces of work being produced each week in Science, so well done all who have contributed this month, and a particularly special well done to our group of winners. Sixth Formers prepare for annual Grey Coat MUNGA

Since their visit to Queen Anne's, Caversham, to participate in the Foundation Schools' MUNGA, a number of Year 12 students have been highlighting aspects of the UN in readiness for the annual GCH MUNGA in December. At the Sixth form Assembly on Monday 22 October, six of the girls thoughtfully debated the motion 'This House would abolish the UN'.

For Team Prop, Thomasin Adams, Harriet Harvey and Bethany Walker argued that the UN has, at great expense, failed to achieve peace, its primary objective, and tends to favour the West. Team Op, Tuesday Doherty, Molly Clark and Anna Blacknell, conceded sadly that Ratko Mladic had committed appalling horrors in the Balkans but believe that without the UN the atrocities would have been even worse. Moreover good work has been accomplished by various UN agencies on behalf of the young (UNICEF) and in the spheres of world health and caring for refugees. The Proposition went on to point out that this October the Nobel Peace Prize had NOT been given to the UN but awarded to the EU for "its stabilising effect after WWII and for its encouragement
