Grey Coat Issue 25: November 2012 Attendance and Punctuality Years 7, 8, 9 and 12

Attendance Attendance is still very good. Winter is almost upon us so mornings and evenings will be a lot colder and darker. Please remember to wrap up warmly and eat healthily.

Punctuality Please allow for all the problems that we experience daily on our transport system. Please always have everything organised the night before to ensure a smooth start to the morning and always leave enough time for transport delays so you arrive at school relaxed and calm.

Year 12 Attendance and Punctuality continues to be excellent, both for school and lessons and I would like to thank all of you for making such a great effort. Keep it up.

Maths cipher challenge

The National Cipher Challenge, a nationwide, online code breaking competition introduced us, the competitors to the thrill of discovery experienced by professional mathematicians and computer scientists in their work. Every Friday afternoon, The Y12 and Y13 Further Maths classes get together in order to try to decode cipher scripts. A cipher script is a message which has been converted into a code by substituting and shifting the letters of the alphabet. We were given this enrichment activity from our Mathematics teachers Ms Ramage and Miss Thompson. It has not only broadened our mathematical knowledge, but has also allowed us to integrate with the year 13 students and establish relationships based on common interests. Thomasin and Bethany who successfully solved a cipher challenge in week 4 said “It was a real achievement to be able to crack the code after hard work and effort by analysing the frequency of letters in the given texts”. Kathryn MacCarthy and Yinka Adeluola (Y12)
