(4) Gymnema Sylvestre: an herb that stimulates pancreatic production of insulin;
(5) Magnesium: frequently deficient in Type II diabetics, this
mineral increases the number and sensitivity of insulin receptors, and helps correct carbohydrate intolerance; (6) Silymarin (Standardized): an antioxidant flavonoid from the herb milk thistle, silymarin lowers/stabilizes blood glucose levels and protects the liver, the most important tissue involved in insulin utilization; (7) Vanadium/Vanadyl Sulfate - this highly effective trace mineral mimics insulin.
Preventing Cancer
Extensive research establishes that cancer can be prevented through the dietary modulation of cell signaling pathways and nutri- ent-gene interactions. While each type of cancer calls for a unique nutritionally supportive protocol, there are numerous supplements that have been clinically shown to reduce the risk of this widespread disease, including:
Resveratrol
According to Life Extension Foundation, resveratrol represents a multiple-prong approach to prevention and treatment of cancers because it acts by so many different mechanisms. This derivative of red grapes, a powerful antioxidant, interferes with the initiation, promotion, and progression of carcinogenesis. In fact, it provides greater protection against DNA damage (i.e., gene mutation) than vi- tamins C, E, or beta-carotene, restores glutathione levels, and greatly reduces inflammation, which is linked to tumor promotion. Dosage, delivery method, tumor origin, and other components of diet could all contribute to the efficacy of resveratrol treatment.
Curcumin/BCM95 All cancers have abnormally high levels of the cytokine NF-kap-
paB, a protein complex that acts like a switch to turn on the genes that produce the body’s inflammatory responses. Studies indicate that curcumin (especially as patented BCM95), a polyphenol in the herb turmeric, safely combats inflammation and pain principally by inhibiting NF-kappaB. Curcumin also reduces inflammation by inhibiting other cytokines and COX-2 and 5-LOX activity.
EGCG Extract EGCG from green tea is one of the most extensively studied
natural chemopreventive agents. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of ovarian, breast, prostate, and colon cancer cells. EGCG blocks NF-kappaB and increases anti-angiogenisis.
Sulforaphane Free radicals damage cells and can cause cancer by wearing
down the immune system. Several studies have documented the cancer-preventive activity of sulforaphane, a chemical in cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli sprouts), which combats the injurious effects of free radicals by switching on a set of antioxidant genes and enzymes in specific immune cells. Sulforaphane thus can control many cancer-related events, including carcinogen detoxification, promoting cancer cell death, blocking the cell cycle required for cancer cell replication, preventing tumor invasion into healthy tissue, and battling metastasis. Other well-researched cancer protective nutrients include gin- gerol and zerumbone from ginger, EFAs in fish oil, and soy isofla- vones.
Conclusion With proper guidance from an experienced alternative health-
care practitioner, nutritional supplements, diet, and healthy lifestyle changes can together protect against cancer. It is critical not only to take the right supplements, but also the right doses for an adequate time period, and to make a lifetime commitment to healthy dietary and lifestyle habits.
