A glass of red wine has between 100-150 calories depending on the grape variety and glass size. A slice of pizza has a comparable calorie amount. Consump- tion of wine has sobering caloric implica- tions. Grapes are harvested at the highest sugar concentration to enhance flavor and wine production. If you are drinking wine, it is common to have more than one glass, making your sugar and overall caloric intake fairly high. As a nation, we need to reduce sugar intake and prevent obesity. Taking into account that being overweight is a risk factor for heart disease, it is not advisable to start a red wine drinking habit. If you drink wine already (with moderation, of course), the best choice would be Pinot Noir as that variety of grape has the highest concentra- tion of resveratrol.
