Investing in whisky
Spirited returns
Recent record-breaking whisky sales suggest that liquid gold could be a shrewd investment
WORDS KERRY SCHUMACHER T
he concept of investing in alcohol has pre- viously been dominated by the fine wine industry but recently whisky has become an
increasingly popular investment option – one that is gaining a much more solid footing. It seems like nothing can stop the constant
growth of the Scotch whisky industry. The thirst for whisky from the East meant that last year ex- ports were over £4 billion, so as many other UK industries struggle with austerity measures Scotch whisky enjoyed a 23% growth. So now is perhaps the perfect time to explore the possibility of investing in whisky as a potential revenue generator. Whether your goal is to retire on a yacht in the Mediterranean or spend every week- end on the golf course, successful investing can help you to get to where you want to be in life.
KNOW THE MARKET There are more whisky collectors and investors than ever before; therefore a sound understand- ing of the global market place could really help you to maximise your investment. Keep an eye on the big players: Macallan, Dalmore, Glenfiddich, and Glenlivet consistently do well at auctions and have a good global reputation. This year the de- mand for Scotch from places like Brazil, Singapore and Taiwan increased dramatically, giving you an indication of potentially strong selling markets for your bottles in the future. Attending whisky events and meeting brand ambassadors can help to keep you in the loop and put you at an advantage when there are new releases.
