Special award for Barry Inspector recognised for long service and good conduct

A SPECIAL Constable from Redruth has been recognised for his years of voluntary service by the Devon and Cornwall Police.

Insp Barry Hunter was one of ten officers from across Cornwall who were honoured with long service and good conduct medals by Chief Consta- ble Shaun Sawyer at a ceremony held at the China Fleet Country Club in Saltash.

He received the long

service and good conduct medal for nine years’ ser- vice and the ceremony heard how, following his return from Canada, it became clear to everyone he intended to spend his life in uniform.

He brought with him all the skills he had learnt in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Metropolitan Toronto Po- lice. Further years in the Parachute Regiment saw those skills enhanced. He also gained a few scars but happily met his wife Carol, a Redruth girl who patched him up more than once, at a mil- itary hospital. In January 2002 Barry became a radio despatch officer with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary

and his Canadian accent becoming instantly recognisable! He then changed roles to officer safety and first aid trainer for Cornwall. In July 2002 and eager to get back in uniform Barry joined the Special Constabulary working at Camborne, Pool and Re- druth.

During this period

Barry carried out vari- ous duties with both reg- ular officers on response and Special Constables on routine patrol.

Promoted

In July 2006 Barry was promoted to inspector and took over responsi- bility for the safety train- ing and first aid for all Specials in Cornwall. His role includes work- ing with the Community Police Cadets, Street Pas- tors and various commu- nity projects. Barry works continually to en- hance the training for all Specials and give them the skills he knows are so important in today’s policing. His tales of life in Canada help to keep everyone amused and cheerful during training sessions.
