Digging deep for a great cause

DESPITE a depressing start to the day, the annual 34th annual Tide Race, or- ganised by the Camborne, Redruth and District Lions, proved a great success. The Lions started setting up camp on an empty, wet Portreath beach at 9am. However, the continuous heavy rain failed to daunt the spirits of the Lions and just before 1pm the sun started to shine.

The Lions sold second-hand books from their gazeboes on the beach and also from the car park wall. Peninsula Radio, hosted by Phil Har- ris, entertained the beach population of locals and holidaymakers through- out the afternoon, RedYouth performed their dance routines and the Lions held a beach raffle to supplement their income.

Diggers

A total of 40 teams, 25 adult teams, two ladies teams, two teenagers teams and 11 children’s teams, comprising 188 diggers, took part, five more teams and 50 more diggers than last year. The children’s winners were the Cross Pool Crusaders, a team on holi- day from Sheffield, while the teenagers winners were the Green Army from Il- logan Downs.

The all-ladies team winners were Havek from Redruth and the adult winners were The Oggies from Portreath.

All winning teams received a £20 cash prize plus a Lions perpetual shield, presented by Lion president Paul Bray. A total of £651 will go into the Lions’ charity account.

HAVEK were clearly pleased to hear that they had won the all-ladies section of the competition
