Thousands hit as company cancels Channel crossings
FERRY passengers returning to the Westcountry from France and Spain have been facing massive disruption

to their travel plans. A series of strikes by Brittany Fer- ries workers has led to the company cancelling nearly all its Channel crossings. Passengers turning up in Roscoff in Brittany for the crossing to Plymouth have been advised to drive to the port at Calais – more than 300 miles away. Ferry services from northern Spain have also been cancelled leaving cus- tomers facing a journey of around 600 miles by road to Calais. Brittany Ferries communications
director Steve Tuckwell told the Sun- day Independent yesterday: ‘A defini- tive announcement on this dispute is unlikely before Monday although talks are going on this weekend. ‘The move to cancel the services has focused the unions’ minds. They are keen to resolve this.’ Mr Tuckwell confirmed that around 8,000 passengers, who should have been travelling through the ports in Plymouth and Portsmouth, were be- ing affected this weekend. They were being given travel allowances to drive to alternative ports and some were be- ing provided with hotel accommoda- tion. ‘We are making our best efforts to keep passengers, including those on foot, on the move,’ he said.
An official statement from Brittany
Ferries said: ‘Following the series of strikes which has been disrupting our services, our board has reluctantly taken the decision to tie up the fleet
t d lettings agents
and to cancel all crossings with imme- diate effect, until further notice. The only route which will be unaffected is the Poole-Cherbourg passenger ser- vice which is operated on our behalf by Condor Ferries.
‘This decision has not been taken
lightly, but we cannot subject our pas- sengers to the ongoing uncertainty caused by wildcat strikes and cancel- lation of services at short notice.
Protesting
‘We are systematically contacting our passengers by telephone, email, SMS and Twitter but this is placing enormous pressure on our contact centre so our speed of response may not be up to its usual standards. ‘Because of this indefinite stoppage we are recommending customers to travel to Dover where we currently have special arrangements in place with P&O Ferries and MyFerryLink to accept Brittany Ferries tickets. Un-
used Brittany Ferries crossings will be refunded. ‘Brittany Ferries very much regrets the effect the disruption will have on our customers but is hopeful that a resolution will be found soon.’ Workers have been protesting about changes to working patterns and staff benefits introduced by the company in an attempt to cut costs.
Sunday Independent sports journal- ist Nigel Walrond has been caught up in the disruption in France. He said: ‘Brittany Ferries have cancelled all crossings until further notice and they are not expected to resume until Monday at the earliest, so we are dri- ving seven-and-a-half hours to Calais to catch a P&O ferry to Dover!’ Nigel was hoping to be back in time to commentate for BBC Radio Devon on today’s Aviva Premiership rugby match between Exeter Chiefs and Saracens at Sandy Park in Exeter.
