Archives office is a step closer for town
REDRUTH has won the first round of the fight to become the home of the proposed new archive and record centre for Cornwall.
The centre, which will house the many treasures that reflect Cornwall’s long and vibrant heritage, should be built on the former brewery site in Redruth.
The decision, by Cornwall Council’s cabinet, means that the council will now be in a position to pre- pare and submit the strongest possible ap- plication for Heritage Lottery Funding by the November 30 deadline in a bid to secure up to £8m to match the coun- cil’s financial commit- ment to the project. The report to cabi- net highlighted the strong case for other sites – including St Austell and Hayle. While recognising the strong case for the St Austell site, cabinet members felt that building the new archive and record centre in Redruth will result in huge eco- nomic benefits for the town, estimated to be £1.7m a year.
Bolster
It was decided that this projection, added to the fact that Re- druth is already home to a number of cul- tural hubs, and taking into account the po- tential to open up and regenerate the cur- rently derelict brew- ery site, will bolster Cornwall’s bid for sup- port from the Heritage Lottery Fund at the highly competitive na- tional level for grants above £5m.
Cornwall Council portfolio holder for cul- ture Joan Symons said the project was a prior- ity in the council’s Cul- ture White Paper and would transform ac- cess to the extensive historic resources cur- rently held across a number of sites.
‘It will offer a be- spoke, modern facility which will enable new relationships with in- ternational partners to provide greater public access to the key Cor- nish manuscripts held in the collections of those institutions across Britain and be- yond,’ she said.
‘It will also ensure that the council meets its statutory responsi- bilities to care for its archives appropriately and fulfils legal require- ments with regard to access to information.’
