Former Goshen Hounds Master of Foxhounds
Guy
Hansen Watkins, 87, died in his Vienna, VA home on July 5. Wat- kins attended Richard Montgomery High School and the Uni- versity of Maryland. His love for horses led him to foxhunt- ing and steeplechas- ing. Watkins was an early member of Goshen Hounds and served as chairman of the Board of Governors from 1968 to 1969. He became MFH in 1973 and served in that capacity until 1985 (with just a brief interruption in 1980 when he “retired” to Florida). While serving as joint-MFH, Watkins established the concept of a “second fi eld” for those a bit less secure over the larger jumps but who still wanted to enjoy the sport of foxhunting. up riding and after graduating from New Boston High School in Texas in 1951, she moved with her husband and daughter to Maryland where they bred Paso Fino horses. Peter Fuller, breeder and owner of the famed Maryland-bred Dancer’s Image, died on May 14 at age 89. Dancer’s Image was the 1968 winner of the Kentucky Derby, but was then disqualifi ed due to testing positive for a then-prohibited pain- killer, phenylbutazone, in post-race testing. Fuller
entered the T oroughbred busi- ness in 1951. He owned Runny- mede Farm in North Hampton, NH; however, he often foaled mares and supported stallions in Maryland.
Joseph DiPaola Jr. of Timo-
nium, died on April 27 at the age of 91. DiPaola, photographer for the Baltimore Sun, famously captured the head-on fi nish be- tween Greek Money and Ridan at the 1962 Preakness Stakes. T is image became iconic and was reprinted on the cover of the
May 2012 issue of Mid-Atlantic T oroughbred in celebration of the race’s 50th anniversary. Jasmine Watkins, 77, racehorse owner and daughter of former trainer Shannon Watkins, died on March 17. Watkins resided in Col- lege Park and helped operate the family busi- ness. She delighted in watching the family’s horses compete at various racetracks, including Smelly, the stable’s best performer, who won six of 26 starts and was stakes-placed three times. Smelly is now retired as a stud at At Last Farm in Aquasco. Foxhunter Bruce Edward
Sieling died unexpectedly on June 16 at the age of 57. He was an active member of Goshen Hounds and served as a board member as well. Sieling was a fourth-gener- ation brick mason and was president and CEO of his family business. In addition to foxhunting, Sieling was an avid golfer and was often the “gator” driver at the June Waredaca Horse Trials, col- lecting cross-country scores.
