A Message from the President
Te Maryland Horse Council has had a busy summer. Our Business Network had a great gathering at Sagamore Farm and looks forward to another at Select Breeders Service. Our Farm Stewardship Committee kicked off with a meeting at Caroline Krome’s Persimmon Tree Farm. Our Youth Committee began work on its video production. We will wrap the summer up with our August 21st Quarterly meeting and our Annual Barbecue at Hassler Dressage in Chesapeake City on September 15th
with music by our favorite bluegrass band, Hot Buttered Nuggets.
Fall brings the political season and all of the posturing that precedes the legislative session in Annapolis. MHC will release its long-awaited report evaluating how Maryland counties treat horse farms in their zoning and permitting laws. Some legislators will be working to build the case for taking slots money away from horse racing. A battle over changes in the state’s Nutrient Management Regulations will be underway.
Te Maryland Horse Industry Board will be presenting proposals to market the horse industry in our state in ways that have never been tried before, and plans will be in the works to win political support for efforts to expand the equestrian competition venues that serve our industry and our community. Tese efforts will need our support to be loud, effective, and organized.
Dave Butts has volunteered to act as our first volunteer coordinator. We have recently formed a finance committee and a fundraising committee and are looking for volunteers for both. If you’re interested in getting involved, please e-mail
info@mdfundforhorses.org.

In other news, MFFH’s Good to Geld program will kick off with our first gelding clinic on Saturday, October 27th, 2012 at Loch Moy Farm in Adamstown. Te Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center and Virginia Tech Veterinary School will be participating with veterinarians and vet students. Documents and protocols are almost finished, and we are applying for funds from the Unwanted Horse Coalition, which provides $50/horse from the Operation Gelding grant program. In addition, the EMC has applied to Pfizer Animal Health on our behalf for assistance with medicines. We will be recruiting volunteers, publicizing the event to community equine veterinarians, obtaining insurance, developing a final budget and soliciting sponsors over the next 30-45 days. If you’re interested in helping with this project, email

Save the Horse Farms from Valerie Ormond
Now is your last chance for inclusion in the first statewide equine planning and zoning laws report. Kathleen J.P. Tabor, Esquire, is completing her research on each county’s planning and zoning laws in preparation for a final report this fall. If you have pertinent data that is not already hosted on the Maryland Horse Council’s Save Te Horse Farms page, please contact Kathleen at the Law Office of
If horses are an important part of your life and you have not gotten around to becoming a member of the Maryland Horse Council, then we are representing your interests without your consent and without your support. If you are a member of an association that is a member of MHC, that does not make you a member. Going online right now and clicking the right buttons, however, solves that problem very quickly.
We have had a great fiscal year, but are counting on a major increase in our membership this year. Please join us. - Steuart Pittman
