2012 FOAL PHOTO CONTEST
T e annual Foal Photo Contest is by far one of our favorite issues as it is just so much fun to look at all the wonderful foal photos that are submitted. T is year, we had 305 photos to choose from, representing 60 diff erent foals. While sifting through all those photos, one foal stood out clearly above the rest. Selecting which photo of that foal would grace the cover became the challenge. When picking a cover photo, the quality of the photo plays a huge role, as well as how the photo will look when cropped to our cover specs. Often, when cover mockups are made, the fi nal cover presents itself. On this page, you will see our top three picks and a brief description of why we picked the photo we did for the cover.

Once the cover foal was selected, and the debate on which photo of that foal would be on the cover, we set our summer interns onto the task of selecting which foals would make the interior photo collage cut. Our interns came up with the theme of class superlatives and then placed their favorite photos into fun yearbook pages. As a reminder, this contest is open to foals born in Maryland, sired by stal- lions standing in Maryland or taken by Maryland photographers. We did receive many photos that unfortunatly did not meet those requirements. Luckily, the internet provides more space for photos, so if you do not see your foal on these pages, go to the Archives on
equiery.com and click on “Breeding.” All 2012 entries will be online by the end of the month.

Once again, Tawna King of Brandywine submitted striking photos of her lovely foals. T e images of Saintly Appointed, an Oldenburg fi lly by Saint Sandro and out of Dressen Fancy (by Dellglanz), stood out above the rest both in the quality of the photo and the eye-catching fi lly herself. As a photograph, Tawna’s images are clear, crisp and full of color. T e slightly out of focus background creates a great depth of fi eld and provides plenty of room for T e Equiery masthead and cover teasers. T e moment captured by this photo is also both intriguing and just plain cute. T e photo represents what babies are all about... all legs! T is provided an interesting way to feature the fi lly on the cover, emphasizing the legginess of the baby. Add to that the fi lly’s gaze and ears at attention showing just how inquisitive most foals are in those early stages of their lives.

For all the same reasons as above, this photo of Saintly Ap- pointed, also submitted by Tawna King, would have made a wonderful cover. In fact, both the managing editor and pub- lisher liked this photo much better. We were again attracted to the legginess of the foal, making for an interesting vertical cover. In this photo, the fi lly looking straight at the readers is also very engaging. Add to that the barn in the background and buttercups at her feet and you have a beautiful photo. However, when cropped to fi t the specifi cations of our cover size, the barn and buttercups are lost and the foal gets slightly out of focus.

Sometimes two foals are better than one and this photo taken by Susan Erickson of Mt. Airy captured all the cuteness one can ask for when putting together a “bring- ing up baby” issue. T e two chestnut Hanoverian colts, At- ticus (Adonis x SPS Rothara, Romancero) and Romulus (Regazzoni x EMC Debora, Donnerhall) are owned by Esther Noiles. T e photo itself is also crisp and clear with fantastic colors. However, here again, when cropped to fi t on our cover, some of the essence of why it is such a great picture is lost.
