Darren O’Brien (Sparks) and his foxhunting/ steeplechase horse have earned the Hunter Chase Timber Champion. This year Darren was surprised to be presented with the inaugural Hurdy Gurdy Perpetual Trophy in recognition of their success- ful career in both fi elds. The trophy was donated by the family of Hurdy’s owner and rider, Kingdon Gould, and the Howard County Cup Race Meet (where Hurdy won his fi rst race in 1961) and The Equiery. Presenting the trophy are Crystal Kimball (publisher of The Equiery) and Kingdon’s grand- daughter Camilla Lancaster.
Barrie Reightler (L) from the Mary- land Horse Breeders Assoc. and the Maryland Million, Ltd. presented Battle Op’s owner Michael D. Hankin (R, Northwood Stables) with $500 for his horse being named the 2012 lead- ing Maryland-bred horse in the Gov- ernor’s Cup Series and another $500 for being the top Maryland-sired horse in the same series. Son Con- ner Hankin (center) served as Battle Op’s jockey this season.

Pat Firey presented Mary Motion (Middle- burg, VA) with the “Betsy Firey Memorial Trophy” for leading lady rider. Mary had fi ve starts in Maryland this season and fi n- ished in the top three each time.
Dan Colhoun, III (Upperco) with sponsor Keith Wills (Farm Credit) and Keith’s wife Pat; Dan’s Private Attack (techni- cally owned by Sportsmans Hall) was the 2011 & 2008 MD Governor’s Cup Steeplechase Horse of the Year, as well as the 2005 Novice Timber Horse of the Year.
