Camping with Your Horse By Bev Roberts & Jean Green

Most folks who trail ride love to see new

country; to explore new trails. Unless one lives in the country near a National Forest, State Park or other, one has to trailer their four legged part- ner to some nifty spot and camp. Folks who do competitive trail riding also camp. Here are some camping safety tips. •If tying to a stationary object such as a

trailer or post, tie the lead rope to a point higher the than point of horse’s shoulder (above chest level). •Tie with a locked quick release knot. •Tie the rope just long enough to allow a

horse to just reach the ground with its nose; long enough for the horse to lie down but short enough to not get its foot over the rope. A horse may be tied shorter, as long as horse can reach feed and water. •Make sure the tie area is clear. If a horse

pulls the rope to its full length, there should be no hazards (chairs, coolers, awning ties, rakes, buckets, large rocks, etc.) in the swing area of the hind feet. •If using pens, tie a rope or wire around the

gate to assure horse does not escape. •Do not use electrified wire for an enclo-

sure, especially where others are horse camp- ing. Should something startle the horse and send it flying through the fence, taking the wire with him, he will reek havoc throughout the camp, possibly resulting in a person or another horse being injured or worse. •Look for any place on the trailer where the

horse might get its halter or feet hung up, such as door latches, low hay bags, bucket bales, etc. and make sure they are covered or removed. •Horses should have water available at all

times, especially at night so that they are fully hydrated at the start of the next day’s ride. •Do not switch feed from what you use at

home. A sudden change can cause digestive problems. •If it is really hot, before heading out on the

trail place two buckets of water at the trailer. One should be plain water. Place powdered electrolytes in the other. When coming off the trail, allow the horse free choice of both buck- ets of water. More than likely, the horse will in- stinctively choose the electrolyte water in order to replenish lost salts and minerals. •In the evening walk your horse to ease any

muscle stiffness. Allow some grazing for men- tal relaxation! w
