Lone Star Cleveland Bay Series at Haven Hill The sun shone brightly on the six big bay

mares entering the ring for the first class of the inaugural show of the new Lone Star Cleveland Bay Series. All six mares, both pure and part bred were registered with the Cleveland Bay Horse Society, were braided and brushed and ready to be shown in hand. Purebred mare Genevieve, owned by Gabrielle Gordon of Keller took the first place ribbon. Haven Hill Farm provided a wonderful venue, with its rolling hills and distant pond providing a beau- tiful backdrop for all the show photographs. Haven Hill boasted 15 classes, including

halter, performance and driving classes. A total of 14 Cleveland Bays from all over Texas showed up to compete, 7 of them registered. Six horses cross entered into the junior division, and two entered both riding and driving classes. The driving classes sported one pair and 6 single turnouts, and the spectators were treated to an exhibition performance by Tom O’Carroll driv- ing 3 Cleveland bay partbreds in a unicorn hitch, all evidence to the amazing versatility of the Cleveland Bay breed. Cleveland Bay Series is to bring Cleveland Bay owners, trainers, and enthusiasts together and provide a venue in which to showcase their Cleveland Bays. All entrants were given a packet containing a DVD produced by the Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North America ). Placings at the Lone Star series count towards the Society's year-end awards program. Www.clevelandbay.org Cleveland Bay horses are classified as a

critically endan- gered equine breed with less than 200 pure- breds known in North America. The breed origi- nated in the northern part of England in the late 1700s de- veloped from what

was

known as a Chapman horse. The Cleveland Bay was a popular all around horse used in driving, farming, hunting, driving, and a fam- ily horse. Hundreds were imported into the United States and Canada in late 1880s but dis- appeared by the early 20th Century. Popular in England and Europe, many served and were lost in WWI and declined due to Agricultural mechanization. The breed began to recover in the 1950s under the tremendous support of Queen Elizabeth II and dedicated enthusiasts. The Lone Star Cleveland Bay series has

three shows planned for the 2012 season. The second show in the series will be at Harmony Meadows Riding School in College Station, and will feature jumping classes, as well as a western division. The final show for the year will be a championship format, with the venue yet to be announced.
