meeting, and this year drew about 20 riders and about 20 more for the cookout.

APHA leaders met for a workshop in

Grapevine, May 31-June 2. 215 APHA change- makers gathered to make recommendations for the association’s future. 28 rule changes were proposed, with 17 passing on for voting at the 2012 APHA Convention scheduled for Octo- ber 4-6 in Fort Worth. A youth leadership con- ference was held concurrently, with several important issues considered. The greatest at- tention went to promoting sportsmanship at the 2012 AjPHA World Championship Show. The committee drafted an AjPHA Code of Conduct for all exhibitors.

4 Clay County teens used quick thinking

to rescue a stranger from her burning home on June 5. Traveling back from 4-H Team Lead- ership Lab, Skee Burkes, Mary McDaniel, Cassie Pickett, and Kasey Taylor spotted smoke outside the small town of Paducah. Their 4-H leader, Sherri Halsell, called 911 to make sure the fire had been reported, and was told that it had not. When they got closer, they saw that it was a house fire, and there were no cars around the fire. They could see a lady on the front porch swing, so they stopped. They found that the 89-year-old, disabled and dia- betic, had suffered severe burns in trying to get out of the house, and had left her walker in the house. Unable to move the victim, they stayed with her on the porch, though flames were rag- ing less than 10 feet away. When first respon- ders arrived, they helped remove her from the porch. Though the victim was later flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock, she succumbed to her injuries on June 9. The young people were of course saddened by her death, but they were glad that she had a chance to see family members before her death.
